    This is ridiculous...

OK this game is absolute fun killer, I'm trying to play it for the first time on my pc and every time I open the game I get "Critical Defiance service is unavailable" error, I have download the game FOUR times and re-installed same crap happened, then I downloaded steam version aswell, same error, I contacted support, they told me stuff a child would know how to do and of course it did not help, I tried making 2 new accounts aswell that didn't work either.... Just what the HELL is wrong with this game...

Great, great, Glyph is best program I have ever used

Hey there! I reviewed your ticket, and it appears there are a few more steps you could try. Check out our support article for this issue and attempt any steps you haven't already tried. Best of luck!

ZamboniChaos, the Solution 5 in that article is really misleading. The article says that ports should be opened for both incoming and outgoing network traffic, which is technically correct because almost all data transfer is bi-directional. But the point is, that's not what users see in their router or firewall settings. What they see instead is settings for incoming and outgoing connections. The connection is considered outgoing if the client established it towards the server, and the Incoming connection is when the server connects back to the client. The connection type is determined regardless of which direction the main traffic will go after the connection is established.

The way Glyph and Defiance client are functioning, they require only outgoing connections to be allowed on the firewall. On most routers any outgoing connection is allowed by default so usually no settings need to be changed on them to make Defiance work. Moreover, if people follow that article and mistakenly open ports 80 and 443 on their machines without Defiance actually listening on those ports (and I've checked the activity on my firewall, Defiance is NOT listening on any of those ports or any other), it will make them vulnerable to anyone who could randomly type http: //<User's IP> in their browser because there could be some other application listening on those ports instead.

So basic fail-safe settings for any router/firewall should be:
Router — all outgoing connections allowed, no port forwarding needed.
Firewall (on a PC that's running Defiance ) — all outgoing connections for Glyph and Defiance applications allowed. No real need to specify specific ports, but this could be done as well. If the application requires a loopback connection (and if it does, THAT should be explicitly listed in the article), then a special rule should be added which allows incoming connection from the IP 127.0.0.1 (internal IP for your own PC).

Those port numbers are really needed when you look up the activity in the Firewall to make sure those connections are established properly. If not, then chances are the ISP is the one who blocks connections to those ports and that's exactly the right time where those port numbers are needed so that you could ask your ISP to allow those connections for you.

There's another problem with that article, it asks to change settings on one's router and THEN asks to update the firmware. This won't work as there are high chances that those settings would be either reset to default or won't function properly after the firmware update. The correct sequence should be: Firmware Update -> Factory Reset (if not performed automatically during the updating process) -> Change of Settings.

ZoneX95, my current tips for you will be the following:
    1. I see you tried to create another account so if those are not working either, that definitely points to some connection problems between your PC, your ISP ans Trion servers.

    2. If the above fails as well, run Network tests from that article. If Trion's server responds properly, then try to open Resource Monitor - Network tab and start the game. Once you Alt-Tab from the game to Resource Monitor, check for connections Defiance tries to establish. 0/0 bytes sent/received indicates there's a problem with the connection on that particular port you see in the Monitor window. This could be related to connection issues (Firewall block on your side, ISP's connection blocked on that port or Trion has your IP filtered). Some bytes sent but none received indicates connection problems too but it's more likely the problem is on Trion's side (the server did receive the initial information but did not send the reply).

I have been told by GM Jynx to send him speedtest, to flush dns to ping trion eu server (which worked fine connection was not stopped) then trace and send all that to him and I did, I had no problems pinging trion servers so I don't really know it's confusing,

had this problem every time i tried to run the standalone..
ran it thru steam and it worked well.

tried again later and steam wouldn't work but the standalone would -

i dont know why it helped but when i uninstalled the standalone launcher, re-installed the steam version then did a
    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

never had any problems since then

wish i knew what actually caused it tho

Many of the problems and with the solutions Trion is suggesting make it sound as if it is the end user's side causing the problem. But with as many people there are having those same issues and the likelihood that all of those people are in the same exact geographical area (same problem phone lines, same exact crappy ISP, etc) is slim to none, and slim is packing up to leave town, lends credence towards the issue being on the server's end of things, as in NOT CAUSED BY OUR HARDWARE/SOFTWARE/PHONE LINES/ISP TRION. Check YOUR end of things.
