So how to I set this game to NOT auto equip ever piece of equipment I pick up?
Nothing is more annoying than picking up something I'm probably going to sell or break down, and have it auto equip itself...

Why is this happening? Items should not be auto equipped, it's making me question wheather or not I really want to pick stuff up, especially during a firefight.

EDIT: Found out from posters, (thanks guys) that only tapping x will pick up without auto equipping.

Before *****ing why don't you read the screen prompts. It VERY CLEARLY says to HOLD X to equip, therefore, to just pickup an item you just PRESS X.

Actually you should.....Even though I've played enough of these types of games to know better, it should be stated clearer to tap X just for pickups. Nobody should assume that players have played this type of game before. It's not his fault for doing what the game says. Defiance is a great game, but praise never made a game better....we must all remember that.
