It gains a random bonus stat and you stop gaining experience towards your skill level with that type of gun. So you'll have to salvage it, sell it and find a new one if you wish to continue gaining skill experience.

Is it better to out-monster the monster or to be quietly devoured?

From what I have been told, it just means you can't gain anymore weapon EXP with that item. You should switch it.

It gets a random extra bonus. I had a sniper rifle that had a .95% reload bonus and when I maxxed it out i got a .96 reload speed bonus on top, so i had two reload speed bonuses.

However, once a gun is maxed out , if you keep use it, you'll no longer earn XP for that weapon class. So usually when I max out a gun, i end up selling it or turning it into scrap. Unless it's a purple or orange, it's not really worth keeping or putting mods on, they're disposable to me. So i sell it, get a new one and re-level it which lets me keep leveling my bonuses for that weapon class.

This begs the question then, what is the max skill level for a specific weapon type?

All skill proficiencies max out at 20. Hopefully they remove that cap eventually to leave some sort of weapon progression.

Well I was thinking that once you hit the skill proficiency of 20 then you can start using those maxed out weapons. Since you won't be needing weapon skill exp anymore, it won't matter at that point that you don't gain any using your maxed out weapon.

    Anyway, just thinking out loud.

The entire system is backwards. It'd be one thing if this game had a weapons curve, but it doesn't so it pretty much promotes find a vendor with the gun type you like and buy many copies of it if you want to raise your skill level.

No, I don't think you understand it. The way it's set up now benefits higher level players which is a good thing. It means you have to work toward it.

This is because higher level players will have more of the weapon proficiency maxed out, meaning they won't have to worry about losing XP for using a weapon that is also maxed out.

This way you spend your early levels raising those weapon inefficiencies and later on it pays off because you don't lose waste potential xp gains from using your maxed out weapons.
