How do you loot a weapon on the ground w/o auto equipping it?

Just tap "X". Don't hold it. Holding down "X" will auto-equip it. Tap it when the icon pops up to loot it.

Press/tap X, do not hold it down. Read what it says on your screen every once in a while.
