Have you disabled voice chat? From what I can tell, that actually disables text chat too. Could be as simple as that. Annoying, but at least you should be able to communicate.

For a social game the chat is very poor indeed.
Also twice i have opened the main chat window only to be stuck on it with no way out no options to minimize or leave the only way out is to restart my PC.
All they need to do is take a leaf out of star trek online chat system it may not be the best in the world but everyone can see what's going on in multiple chat channels, fleets zones, it makes it an ease to team up invite to clans etc and actually communicate with each other even if its just a gg ty or np.
And it can all be done with ease while in missions etc.
But by all accounts this has all been brought up by alpha and beta testers umpteen times already so I can only hope it will be sorted in the big patch only time will tell.

in regards to the voice chat causing chat to bug its NOT TRUE my clan has tried this it doesnt work chat broken regardless of voice being turned on or off..
yes chat is constantly bugged must be fixed >>>>NOW<<<<<
