Character progression is going to be where Defiance stumbles I bet. I'm down with grinding but if at the end of the day you've made no discernible improvement overall then what is the point of playing exactly?
-Story? Tolerable at it's worst for me but way too short.
-Side missions? Way too easy. I did maybe half of SF without shooting anything.
Repeatable content:
-Arkfalls? First couple were fun but the rewards are too random for my taste.
-Contracts? Hilariously hard to even find some of the areas. How many people saw the Mine 99 one and knew exactly where to go? hah There are no custom map pins or mouse overs for sub areas.
-leveling. It's not even worth spending your ego points unless you unlock a perk slot most of the time. How many points do you get to spend between 500 EGO and 1000 EGO? 50? I'll have something like 54 points unspent when I get to 1000 EGO.
I like Defiance, don't get me wrong, but it seriously falls on its face in the longevity department. It's not an MMO, it's just a shooter with a grind.
I think there's just a section of the MMO community that's forgotten how to have fun. Look at any forum and you'll see similar threads, especially in betas or near launch.
Really, if a game isn't your cup of tea then just don't play it. If you hate it, then certainly don't keep playing it-- I ****ing unsubscribed to a free subscription to FFXIV I hated it so much a week after release, but I didn't feel the need to go posting everywhere about it. I just marked it as "yep, **** game" and went on with my life.
I didn't try to analyze the game and decide what it was missing, or what they could improve. Because what I say doesn't mean anything. At all. Where it starts, and where it stops, is if the game is fun to me. It's not my concern (or your concern) what's going to fail or how long the game will last. That's Trion's concern. All that matters to us is if the game is fun to me right now. At this point in time.
If the answer is no, then for god's sakes just log out. Pretend this game never existed. If you like the idea of Defiance, keep up with the news and see if anything interests you in the future.
As for "telling the developer" I said a hell of a lot more just unsubscribing and posting nothing than I did by posting on the forums after an 4 hour session. The developers do keep up with what's going on, but our specific posts and suggestions are taken in aggregate. Our words mean little on their own.
I agree with this post 100%.
Fun!
Have some!
I love the little mini-dynamic events, save medics and troops and all that crap. xD
Side missions too. Sure, I can just run to the objective, and hold the button, but, that's cheating! At least in my opinion.
I like blasting away at all the raiders and 99ers and all that.
PEWPEWPEW!
You're missing the point, I love the game but I'm pretty upset at how little of the game there is. The setting is great, the mechanics are good so far but it needs more. Theres zero depth to the game, and when that is the case why not just play a really good plain fps? If there was some kind of goal to work towards then people would be happy, but those of us that have been everywhere and done everything are left asking .. now what? You'll get there too because I can assure you, if you havent already finished it all you arent far behind, it's THAT small.
The 'random' events, which repeat every two minutes in the exact same locations (yay dynamic) are so tedious though. Left click 4 times to kill the 4 mobs, hold e on the thing that needs doing and you're done. How is that fun on the 20th time you do it? And what do you gain from it? A couple of keys to open a lockbox that will 99% of the time have nothing useful for you or ANYONE you know.
I've done every side mission and every mission, broke 1100 ego tonight, and am still having a blast. The entire purpose of my post was to point out the entire MMO community is prone to over-analysis.
Your quoted post is a perfect case example.
Where it starts, and where it stops, is if you (individually) are enjoying yourself right now. Let Trion worry about what's ahead. It's their job; it's how they'll stay in business or go under.
If the ship sinks, too bad so sad. You couldn't do anything about it anyway, but at least you played while it was fun.
Well this is it really. If something is good do more of it, if its bad do less of it. So much time is wasted trying to "put the boot in" and post negatives all the time instead of just stopping for a second and thinking "its not for me this one...I think I will move on" instead of asking for the game to be changed so its better for individuals.
Trion have made their baby here and if we want to watch it grow thats up to us, they know how they want to raise it and we can surely help by pointing out glitches and issues they may have missed, but to make threads about giving up is purely negative and really its needless.
