its been established that they are on friends list but not everyone on a friends list shows up this color. most friends show up as purple dots and clan members that are also friends show up as blue dots so why do certain people show up as green when not in group?

Oh I see. Well, I've never had that issue. Sounds like a bug then? We all know this game is full of that stuff.
But again, to answer your main question "Why do certain people show up as green when not in group?" It's because they are on your friends list. Whether or not they all show up green is probably a bug in their coding, but my guess would be they were all meant to since mine are always green.
Simple as that, don't make it complicated.

I have friends that don't even show up on my list ingame. However, I think my problems stem from having more friends than PS3 will recognize. Stood next time you see this bug let us know if you get the "is group leader/is not group leader" bug. There's a possibility that the 2 problems are coinciding with each other.

Sometimes I'll look at the map to see what's on and it'll show me somewhere else on the map.

We call it crosstalking and it seems to be pretty common with alts on the same account, but in different clans.

This is my understanding of the player categorisation (after some research to double check things):



The title colours are taken from those shown when you see a player in game and look above their head. The colours don’t always match and sometimes there is no dot at all!

When the system is working correctly (able to cope with all the technical issues like lag, phase, player count etc) it will also show players as these colours on the mini map.
So in my experience, I have occasionally seen non-clan friends as teal dots on my mini map, but it doesn’t happen very often.

Edit: So back to the original question, could it be that the dots were teal rather than green?

thats just from logging in on one toon in one clan and logging into a toon that is in another clan. also happens if a player leaves a clan and joins another clan until server reset.

It's definitely a GREEN dot on map, not a teal or turquoise or whatever other color you want to call LIGHT BLUE.

It is green.

I wonder if it's the same bug that causes the wording over a character in group to not show as green, but the color that corresponds with relationship, ie. {purple, dark blue, or LIGHT BLUE}. I've had this occur a lot during the last couple of events. Not every group member will show like that, sometimes only 1 or 2 members. They also always show as a green dot on mini and regular map.
