I havn't had the chance to listen to all the data recorders yet I imagine something in them will answer my question but in the off chance is doesn't does anyone have information regarding what exactly dark matter is? I know that Dark matter is of votan origin but thats about it. I'd also be interested as to why dark matter is refered to like it's a single entity or Hive mind.

They were an elite faction of the Votanis Collective army. I believe they are all Castithan males. Now they are a rogue group working from themselves.
I heard rumor that the DLC species will be Castithan, I would love to see some kind of backstory / side mission about former dark matter ark hunter or whatever.
