I'm little lost on the synergy mod thing. So in order to maximize a certain stat I need specific mods to make synergies?

The faction weapons have a synergy called "Prepared" you get certain mods of that synergy from the mod cache you buy from the faction vendors. But that isn't saying you will get the ones you need for the weapons you have.
