OK, so I bought the game, pre-order, on Steam on April 1st. April 2nd, I download the 10MB file from Steam in seconds as I'm sure many people did. Then, I see the 10 GB patch (WTF!?!) and I am annoyed but I figured I could go outside or something until it was done. I come back about 8 hours later and I see that the download speed is at .01MB/s. Again, frustrating but I figured with the amount of traffic on launch day I'm lucky to be connected. Then, the game gets to 80%, the patcher crashes, and all my progress is lost. So I start over from scratch. This occurs, over and over, with the patcher crashing at all different intervals (28%, 66%, 90%.... that was the worst one) but I'm a patient man and just started it over. It is now the 8th, SIX DAYS after launch, and I FINALLY get the patch done. I understand the patcher is a known issue, I've followed the updates, so yea, I understand Trion is having some issues they are claiming to be working on. Not that there's been any improvement....
So anyway, I get the game downloaded. I go thru the intro and Character creation, get to the begining and the game is glitching so bad it crashes within 10 seconds of logging in. So, I figure the problem is on my end and I download the drivers for everything on my computer, even if the company that made my hardware says the drivers were already up to date. Oh, and for those of you wondering, I have a 1 year old Alienware 15X. So its not a garbage, DIY computer. Anyway I get my computer running like an optimised Deceptacon and I try to run the game. The exact same problem occurs, the mini map is nothing more than a Black box in the top right corner, there's another, smaller, black rectangle in the top left of the screen, there's no targeting reticle, and the game crashes in less than 10 seconds. No explaination, no little box, just a debilitating crash to desktop.
So I troubleshoot my game's combatibility (Right click the .exe file and its an option) The game wants to redownload the entire patch.... at .01-.05 MB/s. Which, from my previous attempt, should take between 3-6 days. If your counting thats 9-12 days of patching I'd have to do to get the game to work.
My story doesn't end here however! Being a man of means, I went to Gamestop and bought a hard copy of the game thinking that the CD must have the entire program on it and therefore I wouldn't need to patch. Seemed intelligent at the time and I was right!..... kind of... The entire 10Gigs of Defiance are on the disc! Yet..... I still have to patch the 10 Gigs because..... potato....
So then I look for some sort of magical fix on the Forums. Like a drowning man I'm grabbing at straws! I find a Bit torrent site that downloads the patch in about an hour.... but to no avail. On a whim I downloaded Rift, Eve online, and Xcom (All from steam, all in about 3 hours) to see if my computer crashes with any of these games. Rift becasue its a Trion game, Exe Online becasue its graphics heavy, and Xcom.... well because its an amazing game. All ran at max graphics settings beautifully. Yet, Defiance, which doesnt seem to have a graphics settings feature, Crashes in less than 10 seconds once I get pulled out of the jettison tube.
So, that's my threshold Trion. I don't know how you botched this launch so completely but due to your inability to do your job not only is this game probably doomed but you might have killed the SyFy channel as well with the amount of negative press this is going to give the show. I mean, if it was just me, you'd be fine, I'm no one. But you have HUNDREDS of pages of people with problems on your forums complaining about bugs, glitches, lost stuff, missing stuff, patcher problems, and everything else and the game hasn't been out a week! I mean.... I'm baffled at how you guys were able to create a game at all with this lack of foresight!? You guys made Rift for crying out loud! It's not like you're all rookies or anything! Did no one walk over to one of the Rift veterans and ask "So...uhhh.... when Rift Launched what problems did you face so we can have a smoother launch than is the norm?" Or did you guys just flip the switch and hope the virgin you sacraficed to some creepy dark lord did the trick?
Cause with the way this game is running.... the person you sacraficed was no virgin.
Anyway, I'm done. NO game is worth a week's worth of patching attempts and failed runs with a tech support that's non existant. Do you realise your tech team has fixed ZERO problems with the game since launch!? I mean how do you do that and keep your job?
Don't take my word for it though, just take a moment to look at the internet and read the, at best, luke warm reviews of the game. You guys had a once in a lifetime oppurtunity here and you've failed miserably.
Shame on you Trion team. Just.... shame on all of you.
