This is exactly why trying to defend against this accusation is just as foolish. I'm trying to explain why people are comparing this game to other RPGs- quality of content, existence of progression, lack of bugs- The bar has already been set.

Yup this is an MMO. This is an RPG... But this is not a PC MMORPG, its pretty simple really... A console game cannot have the same effects that occur in an MMORPG like WOW or EQ... It's just not really possible, this is a different thing all together.

I was hoping this game would have a feeling of EQ2... Believe it or not, I've already had flashbacks of a PC MMORPG... The fact that I can see other gamers running around and greeting them is the best feeling I have had playing a console game EVER!!!

For that alone, I'm glad I bought Defiance!

As a Noob PS3 player, I'm still figuring out everything. In my opinion, Defiance has soft undertones of an MMORPG, but it is a console game whose "protien" is TPS. I respect that and I have been sold on the fact that this game reminds me of EQ2, but it still has TPS qualities that allow me to pick up and play sporadically as is required by a person with family and work obligations.

Here's the spice that brings it all together... There will be a TV show that relates back to the game.

I hope to GOD that the TV show is of the writing quality more of Battlestar Gallactica and less "Sharkmonsters v. Gatorzilla". With the TV show being placed on SyFy can be concerning, it'll either hit or miss. If the TV show hits, the sky is the limit for Defiance!!!

Agreed. This thread is pointless & the argument is pointless. Sheepishly defending the game by insisting that it is from another genre is no excuse to lower modern-video game standards. EVERY game these days has some form of progression based on play time, etc.
Don't get me wrong, I love Defiance...but true progression would keep me interested in the game for much longer.

    5. mounts = Vehicles
Raids dont equal an RPG - Raids = multiplayer
Leveling up = an rpg element (yay you found 1 true rpg element)
Quests = story - Story isnt unique to just RPGs - Mario Bros had a story. And in this game you Make ZERO decisions about the story, unlike RPG where you can decide and actualy alter the way the story turns out.
Weapon socketing/ Upgrading isnt unique to RPGs - Many FPS games from the 90s had this, and were pure run and gun shooters
Mounts = faster movement. This isnt an "RPG" element. Its something that can be used in ANY genre. Otherwise, any game you can get in a vehicle should be called an RPG now. Mario Rides on Yoshi - Yup, Mario is an RPG. Metal Slug you jump in a jeep. Yup, its an RPG.

See how ridiculous it is when I do that with Mario and Rpg?
Now please stop being ridiculous and trying to say that this game is an RPG. It may have elements that are sometimes found in RPG games, but this game is a multiplayer shooter. it doesnt matter how aerodynamic that spoiler is that you put on your car, its still a car, not a jet.

You classify something by the majority of its main elements, not by the few select smaller elements that may also be part of it.

Defiance is not an mmorpg. The problem is it's not much of an mmo either.

I LOVE how everyone is ignoring Ne0, who is pointing out how this game IS in fact an MMORPG! Almost any game that has a leveling up system is an rpg. I agree completely with Ne0 on this, DEFIANCE is an MMORPG. JUST because the game isnt swords, shields, and magic, doesnt mean its not an RPG. Do you play with tons of people? Yes: MMO/ Do you level up? Yes:RPG Why dont we ask the DEVS what they think? I bet you that theyll agree that DEFIANCE is in fact an MMORPG. Stop being so friggen stubborn and accept that its an MMORPG.

On my first night logging into the game, I experienced 5 bugs before I decided to log out, ranging from disappearing vehicles, to inability to activate mission items, to being unable to exit the perk selection screen without placing a point first (arguably just poor design). On my second day playing, I experienced up to an additional 5 more basic game faults, only to be surpassed by the sudden realization that this game lacks, in all entirety, the gear progression that made borderlands (and any other video game, for that matter) enjoyable. Even now, a week later, I'm still confronted with basic game flaws such as extra time being added to the pursuit races.

Understandably, nearly every online video game has these issues at launch, but when you hear people complaining about basic design issues, don't automatically attribute them to being there "because it's a different genre".

On that note, and I say this with the utmost sincerity, could you name one other game that has a linear progression system in which the difference in play time results in a negligible 10%-20% damage differential? Even if you take a look at first person shooters, you'll see that many weapons, utility items and "abilities" are granted as a form of progression.
Ghostbusters I had to load thing on a tape... a tape! and apart from the ghost hoover on my car when ever I got to the ghost scene i only ever had my packs and trap that was pretty linnear

Sheep be straight sheeping. Never tell a sheep that they're wrong. They will spout out grammatically-incorrect insults at you and make wild analogies (which are in no way applicable to the issue which you're discussing).

Only thing I'll agree with is that Ne0 needs a better screen name AND he should have taken the blue pill!
