It has 1,000's of players online, = MMO
You create and increase your character = RPG

Hence, MMORPG. No mater what anyone says.

Ne0.. like someone else said.. by your definition, even Mario is a RPG game. Heck.. even Halo is an RPG game (since it has levels, raids, and mounts.. again by your definition) even though Halo is widely regarded by EVERY game company and retailer in existance as a SHOOTER.

Player, "Ugh, this game sucks, why cant I pick a class, or have my skills on a hotbar?"
Player, "This game sucks, there isnt a bank, or an AH, or crafting or anything"

These people arent complaining about the game being unfinished or buggy. They are complaining about the game not being something they THINK it should be. Imagine if they were saying those things about Doom or Starcraft. They would get lashback like you couldnt imagine. Why? Because Doom and Starcraft arent MEANT to be games that have those elements. Just as Defiance isnt meant to be a game that has those elements.

So why do so many players come to this game expecting Defiance to have those elements? Simple. At some point, the player made the assumption that Defiance was like "insert any mmorpg here". Thats what the issue is that this thread is focusing on. Its not trying to dismiss the fact that the game needs SERIOUS work still, or has a ton of issues.
    Amen.

The game definitely needs tweaking in a few areas. It just doesnt need an auction house lol. It doesnt need "raids". It doesnt need more skills and quickslot bars. Defiance is what it is. And it is an excellent place to start for a Massively Multiplayer Third Person Shooter. No developer has even came close to doing what Trion has done with MMOTPS.

Regardless of what you want to call it, this video game should be held to the same standards that you would expect out of any video game. The people I see complaining are worried about content quality, AI/environment glitches, and an unimaginative progression system. Take a step back and think about why these problems should be excluded from game design just "because it's not an mmorpg."

You're trying to exempt this game from any fault by trying to classify it as something without these standards.
omg thank you. Couldn't have said it better. OP trying to hard to justify liking this game. Its fine you can like this game if you want, I like simple games too, just not ones that charge 60$ after falsely advertising content when there's not.

Don't get me wrong, I love Defiance...but true progression would keep me interested in the game for much longer.
And "true progression" would cause me to uninstall, just like I did GW2 when they added ascended crap. Not every game has to have mind-numbing, scaling gear grinds and raids with über loot. People are still complaining about it being added to GW2.

And if you think every game has a progression system, then your gaming background is severely limited.

You're really stretching what Ne0 is saying. Halo has RANKS which is totally different from levels, and vehicles in halo are used mostly to KILL not to get around. There is a mario rpg, more than one actually. The paper mario games, as well as the tag team one with luigi on the GBA are rpgs. Not to forget the actual Mario RPG.

What this game needs is more robust social options. As of yet I'm not getting any sense of a community nor the underlying game mechanics that creates said community. Okay, so you can form clans. Why? Are there massive end-game Raids or missions that require a large coordinated group of players to complete? As of yet during my play I have found no evidence of such things. In fact, if I didn't see other players running about on my screen I would have thought I was playing a single player game. Professions, Item crafting, Auction Houses. These things exists to encourage player interactions. MMOs, on some level, REQUIRE the assistance of other players or else the whole point of being an MMO is made mute.
Wow, I really did try to narrow this down to a smaller summation that I could quote, but this very accurately portrays what I mean when I say that this game should be held accountable for what it currently lacks.

And as much as I would like to continue this discussion, I think I'm going to have to leave it at that.

It comes down to this. You classify a game by the major features of the game. As in: What do you do most of the time in the game.

What do you do most of the time in Defiance?
    You shoot stuff.

There might be all sorts of other mechanics from RPGs, to simulation games, to RTS games, to facebook social games included, but when it comes down to it, the majority of what Defiance is all about, is Shooting things. Hence, why its called a Shooter, and NOT an RPG.
the label "TPS" is given to it so that Shooter fans know what KIND of shooter it is. Some FPS fans dont like TPS shooters.
The lable "MMO" is given to it so that players know its an Online ONLY game, with lots of players.

Trying to be philosophical about what else this game is just a side track from reality. Small, additional, side elements added to a game genre, dont change the genre of the game. Final Fantasy 7 wasnt a shooter because some of your characters had guns. Mario Bros wasnt a farm simulation because you picked flowers, Starcraft wasnt an RPG because it had a story.
