Uh, not sure what I'm supposed to do with these. Like the first one I encountered I suddenly had a shotgun and tons of melee guys came at me. Reminded me of a rampage in GTA. I died after a while, apparently didn't get enough points to make it into the top three (not surprised). However, I don't seem to get much in the way of ego or xp if anything at all - so should I just skip these for now and focus on the side quests and main missions?

They are for fun and part of the pursuits for the regions that if you complete all the items listed for that region you get headgear and an outfit. as well as a mod or green item if you get a rank for completing it like bronze, silver or gold.

Before starting, check scores for rewards. Then just kill stuff, every kill increases score multiplier, if u dont kill anything for awhile your multiplier resets to 1x and ur prettymuch ****ed.

if they are part of a pursuit i recommend you try to get at least silver...press f2 in game and read each location pursuit...the one you are talking about is in mount tam south of the first base and it is part of the pursuit...to get siover you need a certain score...try to stay out of the way of the mutants and let them stak up and kill them with tthe shotgun....
oh and a pursuit gives you ego rating, completing a map gives you 40 ego rating an outfit, a title and a hat...plus each pursuit up until the exploration gives you 5 -15 ego
