    I'm running Win 7 Pro and my system matches that of the first post in this thread. I bought the game online from Trions? site about for days ago and have only been able to play a few hours over four days. If I'm not getting booted from the game and receiving the message about critical error when trying to launch the game, I'm getting this error right away when I haven't played for several hours.

    I'm P**Sed that I spent money to get this game and so far this is showing as being a beta product rather than a retail release. I'm ready to call my cc company to cancel the transaction. What's the fix Defiance?

    It seems I've been dumped into the same boat yesterday. I've been playing since the day after launch with no problems, then I tried to log in yesterday morning and started getting the critical errors as follows:

    CRITICAL
    For help with account or installation issues, please contact Customer Support at http://trionworlds.custhelp.com

    Click on OK and then get:

    CRITICAL
    The Defiance service is not available. Please try again later.

    I've gone through all of the troubleshooting steps, including confirming my temp folders are set correctly, updating my router firmware and updating the settings, and a complete re-install of the game client. Nothing but frustration to show for it, which is compounded by the fact that I sprang for the Season Pass yesterday as well. Over $100 paid into the game for just over a week's play doesn't exactly thrill me.

    I work in a game store and I've been absolutely gushing about how good Defiance is, even with the server problems, but this is definitely going to put a damper on my enthusiasm. I can only hope that the people who have purchased the game based on my opinion (since there's practically no reviews out there) aren't having similar problems.

    After spending $100, waiting many hours for download and install........finally i was able to play the game.......until I got this critical error...........my temp and tmp were already set with the var's shown by the original post........still waiting......(running WIN7)

    Anyone know why updating to the new patch would result in; "Failed to initialize display adapter"?
    Cant get the game to run. and no response from support

    I just lowered the security settings on my modem (I have xfinity) and now it's allowing me to play the game so you guys may want to try that

    sorry sledge....it's just not working anymore. I tried the fixes you listed, but they were already there, and even launched from the patcher...no dice. have been playing now for 2 weeks on an old laptop with win7, amd vis chipset, and was at least able to play (rather shoddily... like looking at freeze frames from a bad kegger during arkfalls...but at least i was able to play) until i downloaded the patcher a few minutes ago. now, i can boot up, get to the selection screen...but when i click play, it takes a very very long time and i usually end up with a "server time out" notice followed with a "critical: your connection to the defiance servers have timed out" don't worry though, had the same thing happen to me during the guild wars 2 openning weeks.....it's a port problem, where the client computer is unable to hook up with the server because a few bad ports are c%*k blocking our sweet tango fragfest....i hope this helps, as i'm really really itching to get back to jackfraging pixelated monstrosities...(but if i had to harbor a guess...i would say a tweak somewhere in the "general gameplay and server stability issues" tab shut down all the gates for some of us lowly PC users. so...ugg, pls fix so mungo go boom boom to nasty bad non-monkeys.....

    as of this morning.

    Edit: Just thought I would clarify I have tried all the possible fixes (the ones here and the ones from the support site) and nothing as fixed it.

    Also it is the NA server that I can't connect to. But I can connect to EU server.

    This is affecting me as well...before patch, could play the game...after this patch...game no longer works. Please fix asap...thanks.

    Fixed for me

    I run Windows 7 and I tried running the patcher as Admin out of desperation, it worked.
    Be warned though that this is an incredibly stupid idea because you are opening a network port, with a program that could be flawed in a way and letting it run as admin.

    Try at your own risk, but it worked for me.

    Steam user here and Win 7 64 bit OS. When I use Steam to verify my game cache file, it always finds 1 file missing. So then Steam fixes it and then the game patches itself then I am able to play. However, as soon as I log out and log back in, I get the critical error again and unable to connect. So I have to ask Steam to verify game cache file again and fix it. Here's the painful part, the game patches itself again which means I have to wait for 30 mins for the game to patch itself everytime I want to play. I followed the instructions from Sledgehammer about the temp file. My PC has those temp variable in place already. There is something wrong with the patcher or the server or something. This has to be fixed. And for us to be addressed as a small portion PC users experiencing this, Trion, like every other MMO company I've dealt with, always trivializes a global bug by saying people experiencing issues are a small portion. Just because we're a "small portion" doesn't mean we will be left behind while others experience the game. We paid for this game, the money went into your paychecks, the food you eat every dinner time came from our hard-earned money...so please, have some decency and fix this issue.
