but the desktop icon will say beta on it.

Okay so I am getting a little hacked off with Defiance.
I have loaded the client, still nothing.
I spent 8hours loading the patch notes or whatever it is and still nothing.
My shortcut just says defiance and that's it.
There must be something wrong with it somewhere.

Any advice?

Go to your install directory, double click patcher.exe

That should load the launcher.

Then put in your email and password that you made your trion account with.

8 hours?? Either you've a really bad internet connection or potentially a computer that may not necessarily be able to handle the game either.

My wife has the same problem on her computer. We bought 2 copies of the PC version. We have similar, but not identical i7 systems with Win7-64. My installation works, hers will not launch. The patcher window comes up, and when UPDATE is clicked, it seems to patch, but very quickly. Then when PLAY is clicked, the button briefly turns blue, and the client will not launch at all.I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, with no change. In fact, when I reinstalled, it did not even ask for the install key, so I assume it failed to properly uninstall, as well. It is acting like the files are installed in the wrong place and can't be found.
BTW, no error message at all during any of this.

If it is working fine on your computer here is what I suggest un-install it on hers download the patcher directly from trion by logging into her account and then choosing to download from there install it and then run it to get the initial setup.

Use a flash drive/external HDD and then copy all of the files from your installation of Defiance and then put them on her computer where she installed it then run the patcher it may download a few things and then she should be good.

The installation takes 10.5GB.

If that doesn't work then post back we can try other things.

I found the problem. After trying to launch the game manually from the appdata folder, I got an error message from Windows that it was missing XINPUT1_3.dll . Online searching (Dogpile) revealed it was a DirectX file. The launcher was too stupid to notice it was missing a file or report the error message. I updated DirectX and that fixed the problem. Oddly, the Trion tech support people still are clueless.

It did not occur to me that the install and update programs would be so stupid they did not supply DirectX, or at least check if it was installed, or even pass along the error messages!
