That of course does not mean there should not be any proper communication tools, but Trion, I am afraid, is making their decision on consoles primarily.
I am afraid they will not want to enrage more than half of their player base by giving PC users an option they alone can fully use.

Maybe the main developer or the woman/man behind this communication fiasco is a true proverbial "nerd from home", living in a mom's garage with the only socialization when she/he goes to the market and stands in a crowd of people not talking to anyone.
Ummm.. they have already given us word, and they are working on improving it. They will be patching in some changes for the chat system, both text and VoIP on the 15th.

    Good thread.

I think the social aspect of the game could be improved.

Doing missions with other people improves their fun ten fold.

How about an option at the start of each mission to group up / wait in a lobby with other players about to start the mission? Using players from other servers as well as the one you're on.

The map could show missions where there were empty slots, or alert nearby players that help is needed. That would be something I'd use a lot!

Considering that clan chat doesn't work in game either..... that's not much of a workaround.

I can see the the problem of the consoles:
    1. PS3 doesn´t come with a headset. So most players are not used to it.
    2. Only a few put a usb keyboard into there ps3 and chatting with the controller is awful.
    3. There really is no need to chat or to group up

(Don´t know about Xbox or PC. But I think PC users are used to chat and talk in games.)

The clan I´m in (see below) is doing a great job when it comes to communication. We chat and talk allot. Group up for missions, pve and all the nice stuff.

I can tell you, once you found good players to hang out with, this game is 100times more fun to play! The first week I was playing on my own and it was a good game. Now with all the friends in game its fantastic.

Yes, but they have given their word to what, exactly? Fix bugs or improve overall quality of communication options?
Bugs have been, are and will be an integral part of every single piece of software. Stupid design is something completely different.

Talk at people. Don't wait for other people to talk.

Say thanks if someone helps you out, by taking down troublesome enemies or reviving you.

Show your appreciation at the end of an arkfall, or crack a joke about the size of those hellbug's mothers.

Many of the people to bought this game are new to MMOs and don't necessarily feel comfortable talking to random strangers. If you go first and seem interesting, they're more likely to hop out of their solo-player comfort zone.

I agree, chat options and improvements are sorely needed.
On the text front, that would include a trade channel, and or better yet an auction house.

In groups and or area chat, we need a good VOIP solution. Preferably with a push-to-talk setting so your mike isn't hot the whole time.
Had a run last night doing Delta Bunker and I could hear this dude and his girlfriend arguing ... His mike was live the whole time, so was mine I realized.
    Not cool.

I have seriously had NO interaction in game thus far, unless it is PVP most people just forget their mics are open, no one cares to form parties for anything. I guess you don't need to. I talked to one guy by shooting at him to grab attention and commented on his cool outfit robe/gas mask (can I count the forums for social?) The only way I even caught one persons attention was spraying my weapon at them. Kinda sad right?

Tried talking to people at arkfalls like hey not shoot little skits. Not a single reply.

Guess really the game has no need for you to talk to people. Everything is very solo-able...Or possibly obvious to a degree. There has been times where I wanted to trade, talk or had questions. Again nothing.

Even in big events I have been in so far is like just madness everywhere. I have LITERALLY went to a hellbug arkfall with bunch of players shooting hellbugs and could stand there. Just stand there and be fine. In the rare occasions I do get hit or die - Getting or asking for revives is hit or miss so far in my experiences.

I mean damn dude. I like games when being in a squad or party and interacting with people to get something done.

Just feels very pointless to talk at all in this game....Is it just me or what, does anyone else feel similar??
Based on the 100 or so other posts that basically say the same thing? I'd say lots of people feel similar...

Yepp, for the PC version we need a normal chat system, the current is a bad joke.

The games chat system has a LOT of room for improvement! That said, are you in a clan? My clan (like most I suspect) uses Team Speak for voice chat. I've been gaming since UO in 1997 and almost always use Ventrilo or TS3. Most guilds/clans don't care to hear random mouth breathers so they use private chats. Also, it alows them to chat with people who are out of game or in a different game.

So, in games today, we don't tend to have ONE BIG Chat for Randoms (OBCFR), but rather dozens or even hundreds of private chats. Does that take away some of the potential opportunities for communication? Sure, but it also allows people who enjoy playing together to ignore a lot of clutter.
