Most of mine have been through drops and purchased from vendors. They're my favorite type of weapon by far (well the Frontier LMGs anyway), but I seem to find them less than other types of guns.

you get weapons from main, side missions and pursuits aswell as random fight encounters. i got a shield with a 2% recharge delay from a roadblock fight
managed to get 2 last night from a tier 4 lock box both saws one green with bio and one blue with electric
There is a difference between the LMG and the SAW's
SAW's do more damage and have a higher recoil
The LMG's do less damage, shoot quicker and have little recoil.
The blooms are also different with the SAW's the reticle bloom is like a normal gun outward when aimed or hip fired.
LMG are the complete opposite when fired for a long time the reticle bloom shrinks instead of expanding. Both aimed and hip fired.
