I recall the same thing being said about swtor initially. Could it be that different people have different feelings about the game? people who like it arent some sort of mmo angels, and people who dislike it arent some dirty mmo insect. I have mixed feelings about the game, and I hardly get to max level in any mmo, im not even in San Francisco yet.

You are right that the people that hate the game are the ones that rush to the end but those same people are what makes or breaks a game. Those people are doing you a favor by rushing the game and telling the devs how to fix it so that YOU have a better experience when you finally reach that part. The most successful MMOs are the ones that have END GAME content not the ones that make the casual players happy. Those rush players just see it before the casual players do and move on to the next game.

That being said there are a lot of people that just hate and want to flame for no reason but for this game there are plenty of reasons to be upset. I have had more fun, less hassle, and an all around better experience in 100% free games.

I forgot to mention in my previous post. Even after finishing every bit of content, I still think this game is great. People underestimate how much content can be pumped out, I can imagine it doesn't take long to make the sidemissions and the like. Also the gameplay is just plain fun, that has a lot of weight its self.

Mentioned above is Age of Conan, which failed for reasons beyond "lack of content" such as "didn't work on many peoples computer at a even remotely acceptable framerate for the first 3 months even when their computer exceeded min or even max specs". Not to mention, Funcom can't do anything right in a reasonable time frame.

Tabula Rosa I'm not sure why that did so poorly, it wasn't bad.

Rift came out during a period of over saturated market for fantasy mmorpg. So that alone was enough to hinder it, then it was pay to play which the only people willing to p2p for a fantasy mmorpg are already playing wow or similar and are not willing to ditch their friends and progress there for a new game, even if that game is superior in some/many respects.

I would post something self-entitled that would give me the appearance of being more intelligent that I actually am, but I'll refrain.

    Oh wait...

The thing is, when the "casuals" catch up you'll be spouting the same stuff as the "negative" people have been for the past few days. Have you ever considered that?

Games that release with 2-3 days worth of content on an open world game all die very quickly - do you get that as well ? or just want to ignore it because you are still plodding along with the game still?

What happens in a week or two (because it will only take that long) for everyone to be done with the content? you see the TV series and such as enough? the Pursuits say "SEASON ONE" not "EPISODE ONE" so the amount they can add is going to be so little, a few "episode missions" is not major content. I expect the content they release with it will be at max an hours worth of play to go along with the mission for next weeks episode..

Its really sad when people are so single minded and negative towards people with genuine concerns about a game they LIKE AND ENJOY but won't stay around if massive glaring issues don't get resolved. Stay in your bubble and see a game you like and enjoy follow in the footsteps of Age of Conan, Tabula Rasa and lets face it.. Rift..
I've pointed out in other threads that I'm now at 57 hours played in Defiance, yet still have 10 main story line missions to go before I'll even have the bridge fight to get into San Francisco (although I do have access to SF), I have done literally only 3 side missions. Only 2 Rampage challenges (and no other challenges), only 1x runs of only a single coop mission (out of 7 possible), barely started completing any contracts at all. That's 57 hours so far, with I'm guessing closer to 150-200 hours before I've literally done every single available mission, every single challenge 1x times, every single contract 1x times. And that 150-200 hours doesn't account for trying to be completionist about every pursuit.

By contrast? Let's put this 57 hours into context:

I'm halfway through FarCry 3 with ALL the good weapons and skills and equipment unlocked: 16 hours
I've done BOTH playthroughs of Borderlands 2 (entire game twice): 110 hours
I'm HALFway through BioShock Infinite: 7 hours
Skyrim with maxed out uber skills: 87 hours. I have no desire to log into Skyrim again.
COD and MW? I was lucky to get 50 hours out of each one before becoming totally bored of the repetitive, limited content.

Guild Wars 2: 970 hours, but that's with 5 maxed out characters, a longtime casual guild to lead and keep active with "make fun", and NO decent endgame at all. Crappiest endgame ever. Dungeons are worst design ever. WvW was fun for about 40 solid hours but gets old and has problems.

You might point at that Guild Wars number and go "See? There's no where near that amount of content here in Defiance". Well, you'd be right but only because you're making an assumption that Defiance is a typical MMO. It's not. It's a 75% shooter, 25% MMO-like hybrid, the likes of which hasn't been tried before.

Back to my OP: Clearly I fall into the "lovers" camp. I'm not saying the "haters" are wrong or invalid to dislike the game per their criteria for "fun". But what I dislike are the "haters" claiming there's no content and that other games such as those I list above "had far more content". That's just wrong and out of context.

I'm a 'casual' and the game is as shallow as a $25 kiddie pool from Wallmart-does Walmart even sell those?-I digress. Most people by nature are social animals, there is nothing 'social' about this 'co-op/mmo/what ever'.

This reminds me of GTA and also reminds me why I only finished one of the GTA's, I get bored, main mission run to point A, oh look side missions to do more stuff. I enjoy shooting stuff in the face and the driving is fun.. love jumping and spinning.

The 'RPG' progression is 'bleh' even playing with a ability calculator the 'RPG' Elements of this game-while on the surface seem robust- are also shallow. I said this in beta DCUO at its launch was a more of a social/online/coop/mmo. At least the chat worked-if the voice didn't right away- the world is fairly small.

the OP needs add another section for 'MMORPG players' -no I never played the crap that is wow- so dont assume. This is a 'niche' game that-I hope-gets better/more content. I haven't played in a few days and I'm not really missing or looking forward to logging back in.

But to be fair, nearly every Developer of an MMO severely underestimates how fast these people will hit the nonexistant endgame, and figure they have time after launch to get it rolling.

Personally this isn't my first rodeo...er MMO and hence I know better than to do the endgame rush. I know whats there. Fortunately I've always been one of those people who enjoys the journey more than the destination. So I'm taking my time and enjoying myself.

I didn't even realize I was rushing to endgame before I hit endgame, it was really abrupt and sudden for me.

Compragging, maybe. Bragplaining? Idk.

I personally enjoy ripping through the post-apocalyptic Bay area in a muscle car, splattering monstrous bug guts on the windshield, shooting guys in the face, running at Vampire Speed™. That's enough for me. The fact that it isn't impeded by a steep vertical progression climb is only a benefit to me. I respect that some people like that, but it's never made sense to me personally. All I really care about is a big world to explore and lots of action. Vertical progression has always felt stifling and claustrophobic to me.
Actually, I believe the popular slang term is "humble bragging".

Rather than saying "I'm so leet! I'm finished already! I beat everyone to the end!", one says "This game sucks; it has no content and is totally disappointing."

    Your summation is spot on.
I dont normally buy into posts like this because i think everyone is entitled to their opinions... But I do agree. I think a lot of people misinterpreted what "the plan" for this game was. I see defiance like a GTA styled game with the added bonus of mmo elements. I explore, have fun, take part in proverbial "Stuff" that interests me... and i play at my own pace. As such, although ive finished my episode missions... im far from the end and im very much enjoying things here.

It is Borderlands mixed with Guild Wars and a bit of Star Wars in there, even though I'm done with all the missions, sub-missions and most of the pursuits, I still want to get active in co-op missions and mix it up in PvP.
