If the worst happens and the show is cancelled(highly probable given syfy's track record for serialized shows), will the story be continued in the game? will the game be shut down?

no, trion will still have the game running and will keep adding episode missions to the game probably.
Really their track record is for keeping shows going not the reverse. There were only two shows that got snuffed earlyish but quite a bit more that lasted multiple seasons and are still going strong. Eureka got 77 episodes and it never did that well ratings wise.
Regardless they're already working on Season two of Defiance so we'll get it at least that long. And if the worst happens, I'm sure the game will still stick around if its profitable. Trion kept Rift alive and subscription based in a world that is all turning to F2P. This game should have an easier time of it.
Just FYI, the Executive Producer of the show has already hinted at Season Two of the show, including a new city that may be involved. An article about the interview was posted on the fansite in my signature -- check it out. In regards to your question, there is going to be a second season, and knowing that the makers of the show were also behind Battlestar Gallactica, I'm going to assume they will have similar success.

I was just thinking about this very thing recently.
They're supposed to be able to work independent of each other. Hopefully they won't HAVE to.
Depends if they interest of the players is still there. Trion aint running a non-profit game so as long as they make money with keeping the game up they will.
