In every other MMO I've ever played, and even games like Destiny, when you summon a mount/vehicle it pops you onto your ride. Pressing Up on the D-pad, then waiting a second, then walking forward 10 feet, then pressing Square just to get on my ride is really clunky. Please just have Up summon our vehicle under our butts so we can get going.

There is nothing wrong with the OP's idea for sure but I think there are other things that need to be done with the game that are more important. Also I have to say by not auto mounting you can get a chance to see your vehicle from different angles and take some different kind of screenshots if you like so I guess that is an argument against auto mounting.
Tbh. I like it as it is. It adds a bit to immersion for me, and costs maybe 1-2 seconds.

the vehicles in this game have always been a complete joke, especially in comparison to Borderlands driving, let alone most games with driving, like GTA. When 2050 dumbed it down even further, it really just made it stand out even harder, just how bad it was. They really need to overhaul driving and mounts as a whole. Defiance was bad, but making it worse for a "new" 2018 game, is just a bad move.
Considering how bad it is, i really don't see why they wouldn't just have it automount you. Maybe if you could use the car as cover or use the trunk as a weapons selection or extra storage, any kind of viable functionality aside from moving faster, but we don't get that. During gameplay, i never group up, so it's not like anyone else can even ride in the car with me, from arkfall to arkfall.
Vehicles in Defiance were kind of a joke, so being a less funny version of that joke just makes it look more dated. They might as well make it an automount or sprint visual, like the secret world, if there is no point having them without just being them.
