Can't allocate ego/skill points

I'm trying out guardian, and I have about 17 skill points that I can use to put into skills, however my barrier is at 1/3 and all my other skills are at 0. I can click on a skill and press the upgrade button (as for barrier) but it does nothing. In full screenmode, the game will actually alt tab me out, while in windowless mode it just un-selects everything and still does nothing. Kind of a ****ty feature of a game if you can't upgrade or use any skills.

EDIT: The hotfix that happened in the afternoon of the 7th seemed to have fixed this. If I double click a skill I can now allocate my points.

just to be sure.. EGO level doesn't meant anything. You can't allocate those in anything. You need Class skills to allocate in skills. If you just switched to Guardian, you start that class at level 1 with 0 points available (1 already allocated in barrier)

When I played earlier on PC NA, clicking upgrade wouldn't do anything. I had to double click or use the upgrade option on the lower left.

When I mention the levels that I can allocate to skills that is what I mean... class skills. I accidentally got 2 for demolitions class and noticed that I can't use them interchangeably... but to be clear, its not my ego level, but the points used in the skill tree.
