MMO or not? Let's define it...

There seems to be some confusion as to whether or not this game is an actual MMO. A lot of comparisons are being tossed around not a lot of thought seems to be going into what is being said. So I say it's high time we define what an MMO is, in it's very core and just let the words speak for themselves.

    Massive
    Multiplayer
    Online

Massive: In scope? Innovation? Are we talking map size? Available quests? Or is this simply the precursor to the player count...?

Multiplayer: Pretty straight forward. Multiple players.

Online: The game is played over the internet.

So, as these loose and general defenitions stand, let's look at the game.

Massive: The game is by far pretty large in map and in scope. It's nothing ground breaking mind you. But there is plenty to do and a fairly large area to do it in. And how many other games are releasing along side tv shows that may effect one another-ish.

Multiplayer: Yes, there are multiple people playing. Exactly how many? Don't know. But it sure is a lot more than the standard online fair of 24. Hell, Shadow War matches cap at 132. Seems multiplayer enough for me.

    Online: Uh, yeah...

Anything I'm missing? Is this, or is this not an MMO?

I say yes with a capital "Duh!"

There's no confusion. People are just trying to change the definition to suit their opinion for an argument.

In recent years, MMO has a silent RPG attached to it. So generally speaking, when you say MMO, you mean MMORPG. Is Defiance an MMO? Yes. An MMOTPS? Sure. MMORPG? No.

According to all the Dev Diary videos on Syfy ON Demand, they call it a Shooter MMO.

    End of frackin' discussion.

now, let this damn thread die.

Let it go. All non-WoW clones go through this.

Such a pointless thread. Defiance is clearly an MMO without a question or even hit of a doubt. All MMO means is Massive Multiplayer Online and this is what this game. Plain and simple. Now carry on people .

an mmo is defined as a persistent world with other players, so yes, defiance is an mmo.

I always forget why I ever stopped posting on forums: I try to start a enlightened discussion and get responses like this.

There are many people saying "this is not an mmo", despite the fact that it is. So yes, there is confusion.
