Having it be default on is just silly. Push to talk. It shouldnt be that hard to do.
    that would be called darwinism

The problem with just muting your mic is now the VoIP is useless. If I hot into a coop or PvP sometimes I might want to ask someone something and you can't answer back.

Push to talk would fix this and make the VoIP use full. Having all of us just turn it off or our mic off is not a solution its a craptastic workaround.
Fix voice chat. We need push to talk.

everquest 2 is the only successful integration of voip i've seen. people actually use it. that game however is one of the deepest mmorpg's on the market and one of the only ones that attracts are more helpful and less trollish userbase.

Eve Online uses client side VOIP and it was pretty good when I was playing. I hated the fact that if I DC'd I couldn't tell if the location was clear to log back on. (yeah lost 2 ships that way, managed to save the pods tho.)

There should be a way to let the user know they are transmitting voice. I know other games at least put an icon over people's heads.

That's unbelievable and stupid. How hard could making this feature possibly be? I don't think I'd have bought this game if I knew they didn't even consider this to be a problem. It didn't even cross my mind this feature wouldn't have been implemented before release. I want to be able to hear other people who want to talk and aren't in whatever VOIP service I happen to be using. And why would I want to disable myself from talking to people who aren't in my group? Teamspeak isn't going to let me speak to randoms in the game is it?

How do I at least mute my own mic input until Trion Worlds gets its act together?

Planetside2's ingame VOIP was very important, without it you couldn't possibly communicate to people outside your group, or with random groups you join when your clan and friends aren't online. Imagine like, counterstrike if you couldn't talk to anyone? There's not going to be anything stopping people not in your TS from joining shadow war with you, is there? Push to talk and ingame VOIP are important and they need to be fixed/added.

I posted this as a reply to a particular comment. I'm not sure why it's not showing up as one to me.

    GENERAL
    ● Improved server and client stability.
    ● Main missions are now replayable after completion of the last mission.
    ● Extraction timer upped from 30 to 90 seconds to allow more time for fellow players to revive you.
    ● Optimized objects throughout the world to minimize pop-up and improve overall performance.
    ● Area voice chat has been improved and is now OFF by default.
    ● Voice and text chat channels can now be muted independently.
    ● Text chat now displays for longer and no longer hides when sprinting or boosting.

Area voice chat is now OFF by default. Was it default "ON" before in the patch notes? What are we complaining about?

Well I don't know what they think "improved" means, so they'll have to get more specific about that. While voice is OFF by default, IT ISN'T OFF. It's broken, so every time I log in and make a group, I can hear and transmit voice even though it's set to "off". I need to set it to on, exit the menu, then go back in and set it to off before it will actually be off. And I don't want it to be off, I want it to be a functioning feature with a push to talk key, and for it to be on by default and PUSH TO TALK by default.
