Beat the dead horse? No im gonna take a chainsaw to it!

Ok so I was killing my way to 600 ego and I check my skills, what! my gun skill is still 4? So I check the boards... Oh so you have to get a new gun when you max the exp in it to continue geting skill, so then what is the damn point to geting a small bonus to the weapon when you max the exp if you have to throw it away after you max it to continue to progres your skill??? I have to toss my modded weapon that I have set the way I want, for a new peice of trash just to get weapon skill progression, this is stupid... If a nice new toy comes along sure I will use it but forcing us into it... I have been holding back my animosity for all the things that just keep adding up to a failed release, but this may be the last straw for me.

In any traditional MMO you would still be leveling now and also throwing weapons away. I see no difference here.

The whole point of the bonus on a weapon that is maxed is when you've capped off your weapon skill and wouldn't gain anymore from it anyway.

Why would you throw away your best gun?

Use it in tough situations and in PVP, and save it for when you hit Level 20 in the desired Weapon Skill.

Cap a weapon out, if you like it, keep it, but use other weapons to level it up. I think they cap out at 20, anyway.

Also, Arkfalls don't seem to give weapon XP so use it during them, too. If you really want.

It's a really stupid design decision to try to make the game appear more in depth than it really is.

I think it's to add couch time. The bonus the weapon gets when it caps is random so you'll be looking for a weapon you like, with good stats and present bonuses, in addition to hoping it'll have a useful bonus when it caps out.

Exactly. The loot system on it's own is a total letdown so they try to make you use more guns with this stuff.

It also struck me as bizarre to me that as soon as you have unlocked a weapon's bonus ability (and got it fully modded) you have to stop using it (assuming you want to continue increasing your weapon skill). Moreover because it doesn't warn you when your weapon caps out I only found out about this after playing the best part of 40 hours with the same sniper rifle. As a result my sniper rifle skill has been stuck at 5 for as long as I can remember!

Presumably the developers designed this as an artificial gold sink: we have to keep buying weapons we don't want/need just to improve our skill. But this strikes me as a very poor design decision: trying to force us to churn weapons when there is appears to be very little reason/incentive for us to do so. Unfortunately it does not provide for a very satisfying experience. For example despite the fact my sniper rifle is only level 88 and I'm EGO 361 I haven't found that I like better since picking it up, I like the way it looks (before and after modding it) and it is rapidly becoming my character's signature weapon.

Of course it could be a bug: after all it appears to be the antithesis to the way rollers work. I've been my current roller for about the same amount of time as I've been using my current sniper rifle. While my vehicle skill continued to increase, my sniper rifle skill did not. I rather hope it is a bug as that would mean it might eventually get fixed!

For a game without power creep and weapon progression this is dumb. Either you do a weapon progression, or not, but you don't do something in between.

Bad comparison. In a traditional MMO you use your weapon until a better one comes along that you want to use instead of the one you're using right now. Here the game tells you when you need to switch and most of the time you have to switch to a weapon you like worse than the one you're using right now.

That's what I still hope as well. That whole system is counterproductive to the weapon bonuses and as you correctly mentioned being forced to switch out the gun you like best for another one isn't very satisfying at all.
