how to chang servers?

So does anyone know how to change the server you are on ? I'm trying to join a friend in the U.S but I have no idea how to do this & the game says he has never played before. I thought this was a bug at first but thanks to a helpful user (iron hands I think it was) I know that's not the case.
I tried to change servers in the title screen & in game settings (L2 & pause menu). if someone could tell me how to change servers and find out which server you are on, so my friend can tell me which server he is on in the U.S that would be great.

If you press left or right on the dpad ( I forget which ), go to the friends tab, find his name and hit join phase.

Have him press start, go to the social menu, find your name and tell him to send you a game invite that 100% works

thanks but that's not the problem the game says he has never played before (when he's like level 770 or something, guy has way to much free time) and it says on his screen that I have never played before either.

I was told by another user to find out which server he is on and then switch over to that server (he's U.S I'm UK). but as I said in the original post I have no clue how to find out what server he's on and then how to join him (he's useless or can't be bothered can't decide which maybe both?) sorry repeating my self.

You are on the EU server is he on the US server you cant swap.

It looks like you are asking if you can use your US server account and play on a UK server with friends over there. If that is the case, you can't.

EU and US servers are not compatible , however if you change your router to go through a IP in the US itll put u on a US server =p hope that helps some

I'd like to know why exactly that is the case. So many games have joint EU/US servers because it makes sense, considering they're both (fairly) nearby and speak english as a majority. I only found out today that they're split; and I'll be honest, it sure does explain why the game feels so bloody empty half the time. I mean, fair enough split eastern and western servers. A game where Brits are playing with Japanese players is going to be beyond unstable, lag-wise. But......not being able to play with the Yanks? That's just not a good tactic and I honestly see it harming the lifetime of this game.

I just hope there's some way they can change it in the near future, I have friends in NA which I may never be able to team up with. Its not a nice feeling, given that Americans dominate the english-speaking side of online gaming usually. Makes me feel more isolated.

What I understand about it is to play with your friend in the us you'd need to set up a second account on your ps3 to the American psn and play your game through that account, which would also mean you'd need to start defiance again using that account.
(Edit always pre read your post when using your phone with predict text on, that way you won't look like English is your second language, like I just did)

for some reason it isnt letting my quote you guys BUT

to thejackalofspades , it is to my understanding it minimizes lag because it doesnt have to constantly communicate with systems so far away.

to ewen , i was unaware EU players had different psn stores since i have never had the option to use a EU psn store (i am US). but i am very interested in your theory if that is the case , i would like some clarification from a EU player to if this works and if you have the option to use your choice of EU or US psn store.
