Just started playing and noticed that I can fast travel back to the first "town" but haven't seen anywhere else I can do this, do I unlock fast travel locations randomly or do I need to do something to be able to fast travel to certain locations?

The next fast travel location you get is iron demon ranch. You get the beginning camp and the place you exit the tutorial at.
Try interacting with merchants, sometimes that is a trigger for fast travels, but usually they pop up as you get to the places.
Easy way of helping you find Fast Travel areas: Look for the spots on the map with 2 vendors next to each other.
It's not always a Fast Travel place but about half are =)
You have to visit them the slow way first time, as you travel to each one it will appear on map from then on
The fast travel locations on your map are best unlocked by completing he main story quest. Once unlocked you simply double click the blue markers are your map to fast travel to those locations.

You get them as you travel to that location. Usually they are by a vendor. Just mouse over and hit enter or double click. It's the fastest way.
