US loot box ban bill gains bipartisan support in the Senate [PCGamer]

    Well Trion/Gamigo

Time to get rid of the lootboxes and start monetizing cosmetics better, specially outfits and weapons skins.

Gotta say that the special prototype and special legendary shield, grenade, weapon (with random rolls) caches aren't that bad since we know what we are getting but those overpriced random weighted rng boxes like the event one gotta go (Where are the cosmic mods? How much you gotta spend to get a prime?) same with og defiance loot boxes.

Loot boxes are not pay to win. The reasoning behind the possible ban is that lootboxes are like lottery tickets. If there's no randomness, for example "pay 5$, get a prototype of your choice", then it's not lootboxes. So monetizing skins and cosmetics isn't the only way to make money.

To keep a game fair and generate the maximum amount of money, rental is the way to go. When they start renting protos, cars, skins, nades and shields for 1$/day, gamigo will need to hire more people just to count their money.

Played a game with rental gear once. It didnt survive long. You think its p2w now let em do that and neither game will last a year.

Did you ever play original defiance? remember the supernova? Electric rig? but yea the reasoning is because they are slots machines. The only game I remember that rented weapons was APB Reloaded and it's pretty dead but Warframe for example sells mostly cosmetics and is one of the best selling games on steam even tho is f2p.

I'd like to hope the bill passes. Was reading an FAQ PDF posted on the sponsoring senator's site and it has potential. It needs to be refined a bit more, but has potential.

Realistically though, the video game industry is worth billions of dollars these days. What is likely to happen is that companies like Activision-Blizzard and EA will start throwing money they get from us at lobby groups and politicians to buy them and gut or kill this bill before it even gets to the president's desk.

Like Hollywood the ESA lobbies REALLY hard to avoid any kind of government regulation and tries to self regulate. And historically they've done a good job. Where Hollywood has the Ratings Board for G, PG, PG-13, R, NC-17, etc. the ESRB self regulates and rates. It's when scandals (see Hot Coffee and Battlefront loot boxes) happen that the sheeple wake and realize that big game companies exist for one reason, to make a profit.

To say games are an art form and all that is true and all dandy, but there is a line between art, entertainment, expression, and sucking our wallets dry to please investors who don't care about anything besides a continually rising stock value each year. And I think this bill reflects that.

Fyi read the bill rental weapons are illegal loyalty is illegal as well parts of patron will be deemed illegal since it enhances gaming experience. Bitstores bout to disappear again if this goes through. Im all for it these companies prey on children as well as adults with the predatory practices and gamigo is no different it seems so just desserts for those that earned em. Once the games in Gaming Commission's jurisdiction thats all gonna have a real clear line in the sand, cross it and feds will send ya the bill......

This is already law in a couple of European countries and others including the UK and Germany are reviewing it. Some gaming companies are already introducing alternatives so it will all depend on what Gamigo decides to do in the longterm. But the gist is a Lootbox is considered a form of gambling targeted at under 18's.

Belgium were the first to ban, with this stark warning to gaming companies:
"Companies like EA, who publish the popular Fifa series, could now be subject to criminal law. Failure to comply may lead to a fine of €800,000 (about $100,000) and up to five years in prison for the publishers."

What about the several crystals boxes? I know of a guy on PC NA that spent thousands of dollars on those crates and already maxed out his synergy matrix with mostly flawless crystals, maxed battery and output, I don't really care about being first on pve content but if that guy is around in major arkfall or siege, you have no chance to win.
