i noticed i wasnt getting any further with my last assault rifle in the assault rifle skill, meaning i wasnt lvling like AT ALL, i got one around my current ego and now its starting to lvl again, so is it safe to assume you need a gun around YOUR ego lvl to lvl the skill?

Once the XP of the gun is maxed out it will no longer advance ur skill. Best tip look at the bar on the item screen if this is full then either chuck it or keep it if you want to reuse it once you've maxed ur skill out!
