And yet... we did have a black Nick Fury, and no one seemed to even notice. Are we that scared of offending people, or is the complete opposite, that we allow characters to be changed if the actor/actress does a great job? Look at Heath Ledger as the Joker. He did an awesome job as an actor, but I honestly don't think he was a great Joker. He was too serious for that. Bane was even worse. He was nothing like he is in the comic books, and maybe I wasn't paying enough attention, but I didn't even see him using Venom a single time through the whole movie. Considering the fact Venom is the whole core of the character, that's a pretty big thing they left out. But if we allow characters to be changed like that, how far can we go? Can we one day have a black Captain America? Yes, I thik we can.
The Nick Fury change was done in '01 or '02 I think, as part of Marvel's Ultimates alternate storylines. I think there was some grumbling at the time but it blew over pretty quick. The Marvel movies seem to be following the Ultimates more than any other Marvel version--which is more than fine with me. There was an internet fanboy dust-up when Idris Elba played Heimdall in Thor though.

As for a black Captain America--google Isaiah Bradley and Eli Bradley. Also, Falcon took over for Steve Rogers as Captain America for a storyline or two I think

On the topic of Heimdall I can understand to an extent because it does reach beyond simply being a fictional comic book character. Many people were annoyed because the character is ultimately based on Norse (viking) myth, and believe it or not there are still plenty of people who follow the religion (known as Asatru).
