How to modify a weapon?

No doubt this has been asked several times but when using the search option I could not find a simple answer to help me.

I am looking to modify some weapons but I do not have a clue. What do you need to do so? I have a couple of weapons but when I try to modify it I can not add anything to it? Is this because the name is coloured, the guns I have all have purple names.

Also how many mods can you add to a gun?

Why not just take it from the top? I don't even know if I am in the right place when trying to mod a weapon, I know, its a daft question but i'm not someone who sits on these types of games normally so every little bit of help would be greatful!

If the gun has the mod slot available it will appear with a picture of the mod, if the slot is not available the box will appear with a dash. If you're adding a mod slot you can not have the weapon equipped. If you do not have the weapon equipped and it does not give you the option to add a mod slot then you are not able to mod that weapon. Keep in mind that after you ad the mod you will not have access to the weapon for 10 minutes and you will see a 10 minute count down display showing you how much time is left.

Thanks, what is the maximum amount of mods per gun? Also when you add a mod does that mod still appear in the inventory or does it go else where? Reason I ask this is because a friend of mine thought he added a mod but it was in his inventory and he didn't want to sell incase the mod was removed.

Max amount is 4 if the gun allows it.
