Being a former Store Manager for Gamestop, usually how it works is that when a game releases and said store has over a 100 reserves they will do a MIDNIGHT RELEASE, however, there has been times in the past where a game publisher (EA, Activision, SEGA) will pay gamestop to host midnight releases. The recent one that came to mind was Aliens Colonial Marines, which every gamestop had a midnight release, but the following week when METAL GEAR released they had none due to lack of preorders even though Metal Gear had twice as many as Aliens.
