What games make up defiance?

In my opinion Defiance seems to be a somewhat mash-up of a Borderlands game-play style with a sci-fi mass effect injection into the theme. What are your personal opinions? Did you ever get to a point in the game where you were flashed back into memory of a previous video game endeavor? Let me know!
