Game enhancements that would make a good game great!

I played Star Wars Galaxies from launch until the bitter end when they pulled the plug….I know, I know, I'm a glutton for punishment.

Despite it's glaring flaws SWG did get some things very very right. Things that I think Defiance could definitely benefit from.

All great MMOs are social. Period. If it wasn't for the socialization aspect MMOs would just be shooters. One thing that Defiance seems to be lacking at the moment is a social hub of some sort. A bar, a cantina, a brothel, something where players congregate for reasons other than to get a new mission. There is a solution for that...

    Entertainer/Medic Buffs

SWG had the wonderful idea of including Medics and Entertainers in the list of player professions. These medics and entertainers provided much needed buffs and as a side effect the players gathered together and interacted with each other. It was an opportunity to make new friends/enemies, talk shop, trade items, and even role play a bit.

The entertainer or medic would set up in a cantina or even out on the street and offer buffs for a certain amount of money. These buffs ranged from combat buffs to stat buffs for both PVP and PVE. And while they weren't necessary they did come in handy. The trick was that the buffs took time to administer (usually just a few minutes) and only lasted an hour or so.

This is a feature that I think could be a welcomed addition to Defiance. Extra perks could be added and certain buildings could be given bonuses to buff. Obviously a clan could have it's own Buffers but you would get a bonus for buffing in certain buildings. These building would be the social hubs.

That is the main thing I think we need. However there are a few other things I think we could use......

    Player housing and/or storage
The great thing about an MMO is immersion. The more immersed you get, the more attached to your character you become, the more invested you are and the longer you're going to play. What helps create this immersion is a certain sense of realism. Obviously we're running around shooting hell bugs and materializing vehicles from thin air so there does have to be some suspension of disbelief. But we can't think that Ark Hunters walk the earth with everything on their backs.

So at a minimum lets add some storage to our vehicles. It's plausible that an Ark Hunter would live out of his/her vehicle. And the vehicle models do have boxes and bags strapped to them. I'm not asking for player cities as we had in SWG but some kind of storage to help us organize mods, especially the synergy mods, would be nice.

    Appearance alteration
In SWG entertainers, for a fee, could change your appearance for you. They couldn't change your sex or your race but everything else was free game. Personally I think we should have control over our hair, facial hair, and war paint. Everything else should be handled through either an NPC or a player entertainer.

    Bio added to character screen
It might be nice to flesh our characters out a bit more. By adding a Bio to our character screen people can find out a bit more about us when they inspect us. We can use the Bio area to give a brief history of our character or to list our real life interests. This can also help us find like minded players to group and/or clan up with. Also with check boxes for interests such as PVP,PVE,RP, Ark hunting, and so on, you can tell at a glance what other players are in to.

    Player Bounty Hunting
This one is near and dear to my heart and it was one of my favorite features of SWG (apart from space PVP).

Basically it was an opt-in system of players bounties. Players would participate in PVP. One player would kill another player. The defeated player, upon death, would have the option to put out a bounty on the person who just dominated him/her. The defeated player would set and pay the amount of the bounty.

Once the bounty was made it was uploaded to the BH terminals across the galaxy. A bounty hunter would log in to these terminals and see who was on the menu then go collect.

The Bounty Hunter always had first strike and could attack the mark anytime anywhere.

This is obviously a more invasive feature but one that I think would be fun for the PVP community. Of course different perks would be added to make a player have to choose the path of a bounty hunter. Perks for snares and tracking and so on. It stands to reason that with several factions within the world of Defiance someone is going to put out a hit on someone eventually.

These are just a few thoughts that I think could make an already great game even better.

Bug fixes first of course but perhaps these features could be added later on down the road.

Thanks for reading the wall of text :-)

    Suggestion forum?

I personally think they need to work on those social places like Crater, maybe even add big social hub, give some life to NPCs maybe add radio to each of them with different kind of things, and specialization, I suppose they could use Origin for those. With kind of classless system we're so grey. Radio while driving would be awesome too. Also I would loe to jump on space simulator too.

You add alot of interesting things even tho its not all I agree with but I am actually gonna question companies in why they barely put player housing into mmos these days. Its one of those things that alot of people really REALLY wanna build upon. I think the people I know that dont like this concept is very very few as it is.

I'd be happy with storage on our vehicles or even a locker at the transit station. I don't need a house. However.....when I was playing SWG and I got bored or I was waiting for friends to log in I'd go to my house and decorate it. Display my trophies, add new furniture, and so on. I don't do that in my real life house but my in game house looked awesome!

lol totally missed the Suggestion forum. I reposted there :-)

If they could open up the bard at Crater that would be great. Obviously the game is only about 2 weeks old so we are still pretty much playing a beta ;-)

I assume we will see much much more after the TV show airs.

All of those are from SWG : |

For players hubs I already see players gathering around any location with a store and lock box so I'd personally consider those hubs. People just aren't using chat yet which after going through WoWs terrible Trade channel and TERAs even worse global it's nice to see people speaking outside of group and clan chat for things like sharing information about what to do during a arkfall, where ammo is, etc...

I never understood the point of player bounty in the first place, one example I can remember is EVE where bounties were placed more or less as a joke. Without complete open-world PvP this wouldn't really work. It'd just be "go here and kill this person" and considering you'd probably get the drop on them most of the time it'd just be as simple as the kill missions already in the game.

What I would like to see is some sort of storage though, if they do anything with housing it'd have to at least be customization to a degree. I was rather fond of how FFXI did it, instanced and out of the way.

    Jet boots please!

Serious suggestion: make raider strongholds like on far cry 3. Something for groups to attempt or brave soloists.

I already stated that these were all from SWG. :-)

While SWG did a lot wrong they did a lot right.

The social hubs we have in defiance so far are more or lees just places were people show up to use the vendors. There is very little social interaction there. But if we were to open up The Crater or even have a little cantina at the Transit station, put some players in there to provide buffs, you know have a vibrant social atmosphere.

People can role play, plan the next mission, talk about the TV show, troll each other, whatever. These types of locations are always central to many great stories and it is something that is fundamentally Defiance.

In the cinematic trailer we see Arkhunters going into a bar, causing some trouble, then heading out to an Arkfall. In the TV series the NeedWant is a central location and hub that is used to drive the story along. If the Devs were to, at a minimum, open up The Crater and give players a reason to spend time in there (buffs, minigames, missions), it would make the game a much richer experience.

As for the point to player bounties....it's very simple....it's an exciting extension to PVP. As the mark, knowing you're being hunted adds a level of anxiety that some find fun. As the hunter you never know how strong the mark is. Even getting the drop on the mark does not guarantee collection and if the mark is skilled then it would not just be a "go here and kill this person" event. It's just one more layer of game play. It's not for everyone but that's why it's an opt in system.

I do agree that instanced housing would be the best way to go. They use the same mechanic in Clone Wars Adventures and it works just fine. Out of the way housing that can be customized, visited, and rated.

I think SWG's bounty hunting system should be in every game. That was the coolest thing (next to space combat) in SWG. And I was also thinking that this game really could use a skill set that buffs/heals other players, and gives xp for doing it. I suppose once they fix the chat system groups could have one or two guys with BMG's work as healers.
