Despite it's glaring flaws SWG did get some things very very right. Things that I think Defiance could definitely benefit from.
All great MMOs are social. Period. If it wasn't for the socialization aspect MMOs would just be shooters. One thing that Defiance seems to be lacking at the moment is a social hub of some sort. A bar, a cantina, a brothel, something where players congregate for reasons other than to get a new mission. There is a solution for that...
Entertainer/Medic Buffs
SWG had the wonderful idea of including Medics and Entertainers in the list of player professions. These medics and entertainers provided much needed buffs and as a side effect the players gathered together and interacted with each other. It was an opportunity to make new friends/enemies, talk shop, trade items, and even role play a bit.
The entertainer or medic would set up in a cantina or even out on the street and offer buffs for a certain amount of money. These buffs ranged from combat buffs to stat buffs for both PVP and PVE. And while they weren't necessary they did come in handy. The trick was that the buffs took time to administer (usually just a few minutes) and only lasted an hour or so.
This is a feature that I think could be a welcomed addition to Defiance. Extra perks could be added and certain buildings could be given bonuses to buff. Obviously a clan could have it's own Buffers but you would get a bonus for buffing in certain buildings. These building would be the social hubs.
That is the main thing I think we need. However there are a few other things I think we could use......
Player housing and/or storage
The great thing about an MMO is immersion. The more immersed you get, the more attached to your character you become, the more invested you are and the longer you're going to play. What helps create this immersion is a certain sense of realism. Obviously we're running around shooting hell bugs and materializing vehicles from thin air so there does have to be some suspension of disbelief. But we can't think that Ark Hunters walk the earth with everything on their backs.
So at a minimum lets add some storage to our vehicles. It's plausible that an Ark Hunter would live out of his/her vehicle. And the vehicle models do have boxes and bags strapped to them. I'm not asking for player cities as we had in SWG but some kind of storage to help us organize mods, especially the synergy mods, would be nice.
Appearance alteration
In SWG entertainers, for a fee, could change your appearance for you. They couldn't change your sex or your race but everything else was free game. Personally I think we should have control over our hair, facial hair, and war paint. Everything else should be handled through either an NPC or a player entertainer.
Bio added to character screen
It might be nice to flesh our characters out a bit more. By adding a Bio to our character screen people can find out a bit more about us when they inspect us. We can use the Bio area to give a brief history of our character or to list our real life interests. This can also help us find like minded players to group and/or clan up with. Also with check boxes for interests such as PVP,PVE,RP, Ark hunting, and so on, you can tell at a glance what other players are in to.
Player Bounty Hunting
This one is near and dear to my heart and it was one of my favorite features of SWG (apart from space PVP).
Basically it was an opt-in system of players bounties. Players would participate in PVP. One player would kill another player. The defeated player, upon death, would have the option to put out a bounty on the person who just dominated him/her. The defeated player would set and pay the amount of the bounty.
Once the bounty was made it was uploaded to the BH terminals across the galaxy. A bounty hunter would log in to these terminals and see who was on the menu then go collect.
The Bounty Hunter always had first strike and could attack the mark anytime anywhere.
This is obviously a more invasive feature but one that I think would be fun for the PVP community. Of course different perks would be added to make a player have to choose the path of a bounty hunter. Perks for snares and tracking and so on. It stands to reason that with several factions within the world of Defiance someone is going to put out a hit on someone eventually.
These are just a few thoughts that I think could make an already great game even better.
Bug fixes first of course but perhaps these features could be added later on down the road.
Thanks for reading the wall of text :-)
