    General Inquiry

    Hi there,

I'm in the process of reviewing Defiance for a gaming site and I wanted to make sure I had my facts straight - is this the first game ever made that is cross-platform via PC/Xbox/PS3 and to my understanding, all platforms are in the world at any given time? Such as when I'm on xbox, the players online are just not xbox players? Thanks for any information.

How are you reviewing a game, and don't know the simplest details?

Do us and the game a favor, wait until at least May 15th before you finish your review.

Reviewing MMO's during it's launch month is bad gaming journalism.

and no, the servers are not cross platform.

I am aware of the simple details, I am looking for the technical aspect, and I don't think waiting a month is going to change my opinion. I'm giving it a 9 for the Xbox version (we don't do decimals) as I have little things to nitpick here and there, but more than likely my opinion isn't going to change no matter what gets added. I am however waiting until the show is aired so I can understand how it ties into the game. Anyhow thanks for the info, I was hoping it was a cross platform because game developers really need to take lessons from Trion.

not sure if its the first, but definetly one of very few

also there is no cross platform, each platform has their own servers

It's not cross platform, it's a basic multi platform game like most others. As far as I know there are only 2 or 3 cross-platform games out there where console and PC players play together:

    - Final Fantasy XI (XBox 360, PS2, PS3 and PC players all play together)
    - Phantasy Star Universe (PC and PS2 players all played together, the game no longer runs)
    - Shadowrun (XBox 360 and PC players all play together)

Defiance has separate servers for each platform.

Edit: What is unique about Defiance is that it was developed alongside the TV series, as opposed to a regular movie license or Simpsons spin-off where an existing TV series is turned into a game. Defiance the game and Defiance the TV series have a symbiotic relationship.

I was so pissed with ShadowRun. Love the world of ShadowRun, that game was buttloads of fail.

Ah thanks! I haven't played Sony's consoles for a few years so I'm not up to scratch on recent cross-platformery stuff involving the PS3.

My understanding is that Trion have stated its technically posible to enable cross platform play but Microsoft will not allow it because they could not regulate the players on other hardware and therefore there standards could be compromised. I belive Sony have said something similar .

Square Enix got them to do it with Final Fantasy XI, so I prefer the Sony and Microsoft just hate each other reason.
