What exactly does "Aim Assist" do?!

    Hey,

I've had "Aim Assist" on, and off... and everything seems exactly the same. So I don't know what it actually does in regards to aiming.

Also anyone got any tips for aiming, and shooting. Because I'm schtako awful at it, trying to aim with the mouse, everything slides all over the place.

Aim Assist is a software-aided mechanic that slows down your aiming input when over a target. It also has a subtle push to help you aim for center of mass.

For the most part, people using a mouse and keyboard don't like it as it can make it a bit more difficult to hit weakpoints on target.

If I were just starting with a mouse, I'd suggest keeping sensitivity low and slowly turning it up as you get used to it. Make sure you have a LOT of space for your mouse as well since lower sensitivities mean you need more area.

It happens when you left mouse to zoom in on a target, it will change your target some to center on mobs. Problem is like at Arkfalls when your trying to target that archer behind the jumping skitterling, it will swing your weapon at the closer skitterling instead. If you have trouble aiming it may help but most of us like it better turned off with a mouse.

It's a mixed bag really. The prior two pretty much explain it, but it does have it's pros and cons.

The good is that you can essentially "lock" onto a target for about 3/4 of a second regardless of their speed or movement direction, allowing you to put rounds on target before you have to manually track them across an area. Pretty useful for mobs that you have running in different directions and need to be eliminated quickly, like skitterlings and tier 1 raiders.

Bad is that when aiming at several targets, it will generally target the closest one, which may not be the one you want. Some people have kill orders (order of greatest threat to least threat that they eliminate first) and the aim assist doesn't take that into account.

Should of tried the reservoir chickens when Aim Assist would lock onto the ranchers. glad they changed that one

Definitely sound advice for somebody who is new or otherwise not very good at mouse aim. Having played shooters for many years, I'm sure my high sensitivity would drive most people up the walls, but I certainly didn't start out using that high a sensitivity.

Aim Assist might help somebody in that situation, but I would recommend biting the bullet and learning how to aim without it... Once you get the hang of it you'll be better off I think.
