Maybe the reputation of Trion made him buy the game? after all they have Rift under their belt which gave them their good reputation to begin with.
I know many players from my old Rift guild have quit Defiance after one week due to many many issues regarding which Trion was made aware of during betas.
They bought it only because of name Trion the mistake they said won't happen again. We were 15 in total and started the guild and i alone log now for an hour or so.

How is the game half done when their plan from the start was to sell DLC along the way.
Makes no sense.
Research games first before buying if $60 is a huge deal. Don't like rocky mmo launches? Wait a few weeks before buying.
This might be your first mmo so I forgive you.
Fix for the vehicle skill reset: Change vehicles and fast travel very often.
Fix for the weapon skill reset: Use the same gun for a long time, it doesnt give more xp after the gun itself is leveled up.
Deal with it for like 24 more hours, and then youll have a client patch. All of us do.

I mean, if there is a date for the show, it makes sense they would release the game before or with it. I am happy I bought it, the game is great and more than enough to keep me entertained, if you rush just the main quest without even looking at pursuits or side missions or PvP, sure, you will be finished with the game soon. But still, there is promise of more content with each episode, and if as you say, this is happening all the time, why did you buy it on day 1 or before? Why didn't you wait for some feedback from players?
some of you, not all, but some, are really not smart people.
It happens when you use beta test as trial version (access to "beta" was a part of pre-order deal) instead of actually beta testing game.
Example of bad testing: amount of crap on paths of time trials is unbearable. Some NPC spawns appear *on top* of race gates surrounding them with debris. I ask clanmates to move to special "cursing" channel when they do time trials.
Just because it is common business practice to rush out MMOs unfinished doesn't mean it's okay. And I have to agree with OP, we have basically purchased a game that is still in it's beta phase. Time will change that, but anybody who asks me now whether they should play Defiance gets my recommendation to wait a few months.
