so why do we lvl up ?

weapon types are lvled up = more dmg and stats
you also lvl up for ego "perks" like u do other shooters, like for example warhammer space marine (yes i love this game) and you get weapons unlocked at certain lvls 1-41 and other perks for doing kill streeks or 15 head shots with a certain weapon (with over shields and ppl with jetpacks not so easy).

also im guessing alot of ppl here never played an mmo before. lets just say the lvling system in mmos helps u understand the game / class / spec you are playing as (or loadout for defiance) and you get used to the games mechanics and get better and better as time goes on. it also gives u a long term goal and a reason to play (alot of mmo players just like the lvling and get board of max lvl easy).
although i will admit those mmorpgs do get very boring at max lvl as its just the same thing over and over and normally months b4 any update comes. atleast with a shooter u can just fight ppl and have fun doing it.
(in mmorpg pvp gets very crap very fast once 1 class dominates every other class or u have the clusterf**k modes involveing hundreds of players v hundreds e.g guild wars 2 world vs world vs world).

as for gear in this game it will mostly come down to

    1. how strong is your overshield
    2. what weapon are you using (shotguns are insane at close range and sniper rifles insane at long range)
    3. who has the better aim
    4. who shoots first

ive met ppl in space marine who are max lvl with best weapon and best perks. and couldnt aim to save their life. and dont forget as this will be on consoles to u will be playing with alot of younger players (id say 13-16) mostly black ops 2 / halo players, that being said they actually need to find out about this game, and seeing as they normally have sub par IQ / gamer skills i doubt they will discover this game.

i say this as i played on xbox live for the first time in 4 years the other day, and OMG how many squeeky voice i heard after i decimated them in death match games lol.

I'm not suggestion skill or tactics should not be involved, if you to take cover, dodge my attacks, team up with buddies , shoot something explosive next to me, or run me over with a truck, i would expect to lose. however i do think that level 5000 veteran should be challenging for a new recruit in a one on one match. Gear and the time required to achieve that gear should have value, not god mode value but defiantly worthy of invested hours

simple fact is better gear and higher lvl will give you a combat edge. but only in roughly equal skill engagements.

so why go for better gear? cause every little bit helps, why get internet with the lowest latency, why try to be the best shot you can be, why use the weapon your best with, why try dodging, why try for optimal positioning. cause if your not getting better, your stagnant and stagnation leads to decay.
I think the dev quote was in comparison to a traditional MMO where a lvl 1 character could not come close to killing a max level character even if the player was AFK for five minutes. This game will have a closer leveling gap, but I don't think that it will be close enough where skill overrides time spent. At max level, the perks alone will give a max level character and incredibly strong advantage. Through perks, while crouching and not moving a player can get a 30% damage reduction and with maxed out Overcharge get a +30% damage increase. That's a 60% damage difference alone the player has to overcome. Not to mention that once you get through your opponents shield they have a perk that gives 50% damage reduction for 3 secs. This is just with perks. Once you factor in stronger shields and weapons it becomes even more one-sided.

So yes it is possible for a highly skilled low-level player to kill a max level player, but they would have to output 200-300% more damage.

warhammer age of reckoning has level restricted pvp which benefits people lower leveled with extra stats to make up against higher level players. what are the chances of such things?

Im wondering what is the point in having any leveling system or evolving skills in a shooter if at the end of the day it still comes down to who gets the first head shot? why even bother with the MMO aspect when many of gamers who play Shooters don't stick around for the long haul on any one game, they move to the next variant as soon as its out, especially if your talking about consoles, and i would not expect that behavior to change just because the playground is bigger.

What is going to motivate players to stick around if there's no continued advancement characteristic of a standard MMO. Why a Standard MMO? well most MMO's are Fantasy in nature, meaning they are some sort of RPG, this game is going to be filled with lore, character history, new languages, complete with a TV show. that's more akin to an intellectual audience of Fantasy.

Fantasy games are normaly associated with character building. Meaning that if ive spent the last few months gaining levels, experience and Gear, i expect that effort to mean something on the battle field.

    so in summary
what is the Draw to keep me as a player spending hours upon hours evolving my character if the end result is the typical prefab template style shooter character with no combat edge.
    Short answer is. There isn't.

as resopmi said. there isn't, you gain ego levels which basically allow you to unlock perks, use new equipment and go to new areas. not make you more powerful. well massivly more anyway

its not a level based system like traditional mmos, think of it closer to COD, you level, you get new guns, etc but you can still get your backside cained by a rank 1.

Except for, unlike COD and other shooters, there won't be leaderboards, stat tracking, and other things that keep people playing and bragging.
