Thread: Beta 3 Question

  1. #11
I don't know if we can be certain the 360 will have the smallest playerbase. As I am sure you know, it's basically the go-to console for shooters, and this game being F2P will surely mean that those already paying those XBL fees will likely be onboard. I have 85 people in my XBL friend list, and out of those, I have confirmed around half of them are getting this day 1. Just so you have an idea what I mean.

I used to work for Funcom, and almost got hired on by the team behind FE. Oh that was fun stress testing. 'Crap, well, we broke the tutorial. I guess thousands of users in the same zone at the same time proved instability!'

THATS what Beta testing should be.

As far as Xbox players being the smallest Play base, Look at Borderlands 2. It was on all platforms, and 360 still had the smallest playerbase. PC will easily have the largest player base, and will also be hammered the hardest by stress testing, especially when a bajillion people all hit the same zone at once. :P

To the initial question, it's likely a stress test. My guess is that the 360 version is as stable or moreso than the PC version and as such is a low priority in testing.

Yeah, it sucks that we don't get much time to play, but technically playing beta is a privilege and not a right.
I'm not trying to be a jerk but thr Beta isn't a privilege when its being sold as guaranteed with preorder of the product. A good example would be if they did not put up a beta at all after advertising like this they would be found guilty all day of false advertising.

I'm not overly irritated by the limited beta as everything I have seen shows the 360 has been extensively tested but I am glad they did not welch completely. I am disappointed however.

Ironic, since I tend to prefer PS3 shooters, especially if they support Move/Sharpshooter. (Just my preference, by no means the "blanket standard".)

I hope it is, because I've seen foul ups where they never bothered to stress test. Open Betas tend to be alot of people whining about bugs and glitches, but not submitting the bugs.
Of course he is right. Semantics. My point was he didn't have to be "that guy". I am not an idiot, I know what beta testing is, I just wanted to know what the aim of it is on 360 since ours is so much shorter than the others.

All I have to say is look up sale units for the Xbox 360 since its release worldwide the only country that really bought into it was the US at something like 24 million plus units. Everywhere else its not even half of that and some its not even a quarter of it. While the Playstation 3 has more units actually sold in most other areas across the board. However, I don't think it has sold as many as the Xb360 in the US but I think last I looked its getting close.

Now before I get a troll or someone saying fan boy and what not I am just saying facts and giving a thought of why they might have a shorter test which would also be why they have the PS3 starting a day apart from each other based on region.

Nah, even open betas will rarely let you keep progression, as technically you're still playing an incomplete game. Unless its actually a disguised 'demo'.

Also, they want to stagger the testing any how, or else you got the initial stress load for all platforms at once, and that in and of it self, would likely be a complete ***** to handle, if previous stress tests I've been involved with are an indication.

Remember, devs will be discovering new bugs/tinkering with things in game, then you got the actual server guys who have to keep the servers up/bring them back up if they come down. If you want an example of what happens when you have a ton of people hammering servers, remember the WoW stress test before release, five minutes after it came up, it went right back down from 20,000+ Users hitting the login servers at once. Course, they just rebooted that system.. god Trion please tell me there is a SEPERATE login server.

That and Microsoft has some way weird views on like, beta testing products on their stuff. I'm not saying 360 players aren't being considered, but to stress test, they likely have smaller servers set up, due to the smaller expected numbers. Thus by cramming every one in on 360 in a shorter period of time, they can resolve issues due to the smaller projected player base.

Thats my theory, because lets face it, 360's pay to play online crap isn't winning favours with people, that, and the game to my knowledge, was developed for PC and ported..which is normal for most games these days, but I have faith Trion did a good port, unlike some games I've played.

Want to see a terrible port from Console to PC? Viking: Battle for Asgard.
You have no facts to back up this claim. I cannot verify anything, but I saw stats that 360 had the MOST pre-orders followed by PC then PS3. In reality, 360 is probably the most stable platform and therefore requires less testing.

Consoles are MUCH easier to write stable code for compared to PC hardware. Theres so many configs in PC hardware thats why it requires much more testing. Devs have developer consoles and can do a lot of inhouse testing before they need the masses to help out.

I think you might find that is the reason they only need numbers to stress test.

Also ,sorry to be pedantic ,but Open beta is just that, Open to everyone no need to sign up and agree to NDA (which means we are still in closed beta) And it does not mean you get to keep your items etc, that would be early/head start.

And while I am being pedantic, Defiance isnt F2p its B2p as far as i was aware. We need to buy the client and then its free to continue to play.
