I can't wait to fight this Nim guy.. I've been waiting for a real challenge.
Everything else in this game has been dirt easy so far >_<

if you want some advice rock tactical cloak it takes the need fo hiding a dodging away for some of the fight as it instantly regenerates your shield. yeah you need to be fast and think ahead but its a thought.
I've seen a lot of advice about specific perks to use, but you realize that players can hit this Nim fight at just over 300 EGO or less, right? You haven't opened up much of the perk grid by that point and it isn't an option to just equip perk X or perk Y to cope with the fight. What's that? Grind more EGO and work to open up those perks before trying Nim again? Most players will not have the patience nor the inclination to do so.
Again, if this were optional side content of some sort, I'd be singing a different tune. But this is mainline story content, and it shouldn't block people who either picked the "wrong" perks by the time they hit this fight, or block players for any of the reasons I list in the OP.
Example: I'll never, ever be able to finish the storyline in GW2, because the final story episode requires you to do a full group dungeon run in (arguably) the hardest dungeon in the game. By the point I got there, I swore I would never set foot in a crappy GW2 dungeon ever again because their designers are clueless. Most of my 15-player casual guild felt the same, and this was a guild that had no problem, for example, completing all of the "Elite" dungeons in The Secret World (the middle difficulty tier in that game). To date, only one player from my casual guild has actually completed the GW2 storyline.

Some of the draws to video gaming is the challenge and learning to overcome those challenges.
I would like to reference back to games like Mike Tysons Punch Out, Contra, Paper Boy. etc etc.
Games were always hard at first. Even Mario Bros when you didn't know speed running ran you across those 1x1 bricks with holes between them.
My wife is just not wanting to take the time to do it so she has me do it.
Nim and other fits, with enough time vested into it anyone will be able to complete.
So its all about time. If you dont want to use your time to learn but rather time to complain i would start learning more and complaining less.
She complains and I could force her to just learn the fight and she would get it. She did get it on the 1st mission that forces you to solo.
Her first 4 times playing she got fed up and gave up but a week later after playing side missions and doing stuff with me she went back to it and solo'd it.
So she learned and adapted.
Wow did the dumb things down game and it ruined Wow.
So i dont want to see Trion dumb down content just because people dont wish to invest time into their game they worked hard to create.
That, or have a friend come over and do the mission for you. Thats what we all did before the internet came out. You brought your system, you brought your game. You spent the weekend at a friends house hashing the game out till you beat it.
The entitlement gamer these days is getting worse and worse and its not helping new games as they get developed.

You don't need perks to beat anything in this game.

All 3 phases of Nim can be beaten with a single BMG that slows enemies down.
You find that and use decoy and you wont loose.
Just dont let him hit you and recognize his attack animations. Its easy enough to move behind a wall when he winds up his sumersault AOE

Never played any of the games you listed. Never wanted to. Hate platformers of any stripe. Hate "fighting" games: they just make your hands hurt. Hate running games.
Love MMOs. Love (most) shooters. Played nearly every of both genre. Defiance is a match made in heaven, overall. I will have no problem beating NIM. Would have beat him on the first "attempt" if I hadn't simply run out of time and had to log out. Was on the third stage and getting his patterns down. My spouse? different story. Lots of gamer friends I have, who aren't "leet" or even close to it? Different story. And even for myself, the entire time I'm thinking "this fight is way overtuned compared to the difficulty level of everything else in the entire game. This fight is a grind. This fight is way too long. This fight is making my hands hurt. I'm not having fun, there is no significant tactical challenge or thinking: it's just sheer reaction time whack-a-mole crap with constant dodging and LOSing."
As for WoW? They're still the 900-lb gorilla that every other MMO wishes they could be, revenue-wise. GW2 had a shot at unseating them, but they blew it with their bad end-game design: Dungeons are too hard/long for most of their core audience, and WvWvW is too limited and they haven't been able to successfully address culling and "zerg wins".
See, here's the deal: in the end, everyone just wants a game to be:
1. Fun
2. Have lots of replay value.
Problem is, everyone's idea of "fun" is very different. To each their own. All a designer has to do to satisfy the "only a hard challenge is fun" people is to put that hard content off to the side. The people who don't want the hard content just ignore it and do the stuff that they find fun instead. The people that want the hard content can optionally go find it and enjoy to their heart's content.
The main thing wrong with the Nim fight is that in it's current state, it's not "off to the side" like it should be. It's blocking progress and enjoyment for more people than I think you suspect.
Edited out the double posting.
You make some great points there and im sad you haven't had a chance to play with some of the classics. I used them to reference because it was again during an era where there was no wiki page to read off for cheats or strats, was no twitch or youtube to watch so someone can show you how to do it. It was trial and error. over and again.
I haven't heard of anyone running the Nim fight over 100 attempts and failing at each of them. And if there is a person who has done it 100 times in a 100 different variations with different ego skills like cloak or decoy and different weapons like Slow BMG and Airburst launcher.
If this someone exsist, they have something to either complain about or be very very embarrased by.
A game that was tooooo difficult.
Diablo 3 Inferno Difficulty.
The only reason why it was difficult was not the fact you got one shotted by everthing in act 2. But the fact that the game didn't give you anything to get better with so you could progress.
Items weren't dropping and to buy items from the AH means you needed items to sell which you couldn't because only those who already had the items were farming them and had the pricess up so high no one could afford them. This led to the crash of Inferno and the nerfing of the difficulty and the whole MP1-10 system which is now decent.
But this wont work for Defiance. What Defiance does offer is the ability to earn more ego, to unlock more weapons, to raise your stats and to try other missions besides the main story while keeping with the 2 core values you made a great point in saying:
1. Fun
2. Replay
you dont seem to have an issue with Nim but you see how it is hard for others. Like i saw how it was hard for my wife. "Thats what she said" - sorry, had to say it.
Like before and I dont want to beat the horse on it but trial and error. If you fail, try try again. As a gamer you learn the moves, you learn the timers and you move forward as a stronger gamer.
Since you play MMO's i'll use MC from WoW.
When MC was the only major dungeon. A 40 man dungeon you had to rely on 39 other people knowing the boss's and mobs abilities and weakness you had a large potential gap in skill and time.
Our guild took us 6 hours in one sitting before we gave up on the 1st. THE FIRST boss in MC! Clearing dog pack respawns and running back in just to kill those two lizzards before the big fire dog.
6 hours a day for i dont know how many days before we built a team of 40 people who had been there long enough and often enough to know how the fight went.
Once we down him for the first time the sweet roar of success filled my dorm. lol
This was the same when we were server first for the hord on BWL for Nefarian. Hours, Days, Weeks, even Months of playing the same content over and again to learn it to finally beat it was very rewarding.
We didn't ask blizzard to nerf the dungeons only a few weeks into release. We just delt with it and figured it out.
This is the difference between the MMO gamers of 2002-2004 to the entitled gamers of today i feel.
No one wants to invest the time.
Now as a husband and having a 40 hours a week job i dont have the luxury of spending 6 hours each night learning new content.
I get this believe me.
But as said for Defiance and for Nim the fight isn't that difficult. It takes just a bit of time and patience.

Want to nerf Nim a "wee bit"? Let's give him 10 less hp per stage.
