Do Biomen count as a race, or are they just genetically enhanced xxx race like mutants? If so, that would be the eighth race as other posters have suggested.

Biomen ARE mutants. And humans at that. They're genetically enhanced EMC bio marines or something like that.

yeah I'd count them as a race, but they aren't Votan or alien in origin.

    They are genetically-engineered, lab-grown Humans.

Where was it ever stated that there are 8 Votan races?

The 8 'races' in Defiance are 7 Votan and 1 terrestrial (aka, Humans) and I haven't seen anything that would disagree with that.

Defiance Wiki links to a Comic-Con 2012 panel as the source.

I haven't seen the video, but you might get your answer there.

Ugh, not watching an hour of comic-con interviews, sorry.

Anyway, having watched the pilot, at one point the mayor states that 'the 8 races live in harmony'. She doesn't say 'the 8 Votan races and humans' or 'the 8 races and humans', she just says 'the 8 races'. It would be very odd to exclude humans.

It was said somewhere by a dev in one of the "making of" type videos that one race was actually removed, an energy based race called Gulans or something like that. They were replaced by the Gulanite resource. that makes me wonder what the original system was, collecting alien energy beings to mod your weapons? How weird would that be?

The Gulanee are very much still in the game. That's what the end boss in Explosions 101 is.

Right. She is referring to the humans and the 7 Votan races that made it to earth.

However there is an 8th Votan race that was supposedly left behind.

Here. This website apparently talks about what was said in comic-con
    http://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/sci...-comiccon.html

    Particularly:
Murphy said they were really telling the story of how these seven alien races came to earth looking to start a new life after their planet was destroyed, found an indigenous race already there, and now it’s all about them looking to create a better life together. When it was pointed out that usually in these situations things don’t go so well for the indigenous people, Kevin Murphy responded, “In this case the indigenous people are the humans and they don’t require expensive prosthetics and makeup effects. I really like our chances for survival.” Murphy went on to hint that an as-yet-unnamed race that the Votan thought they left behind is somewhere out in space and will end up being the show’s “Big Bad”, further uniting the races of Earth, both old and new.
