Default settings for mic's

Probably a silly question but are the mics defaults settings muted or on?

I know there is issues with mics on ps3 at the moment i'm just wondering when its sorted out and i play if i have to turn the mic on or if its already on

It's already on by default.

If you are having trouble communicating with your buddies, remember that down on the D-Pad moves the chat channel between Area, Group, Team, and Clan chat. Make sure you're on the appropriate channel for your situation. All your friends have to be on the same channel.

And be aware that chat is very broken in Co-Op missions. To get chat working after you finish a Co-Op mission, right now, you have to actually quit the game and re launch it. Until they release the patch, you could be experiencing all sorts of weird bugs in addition to this one.

I figured out that the Down arrow switches channels but as far as I can tell the Voice Chat doesn't actually work. I am hoping the patch fixes it. Would improve the game by a lot.

I am having similar problems. My friend and I are both in group chat and I can hear him just fine but he can't hear me at all. This is just in the regular game, not co-op maps. I'm hoping the next patch fixes the problem as well!
