It reminded me of Mr. T's character driving the van on the A-Team.

Other than the driving... I think that Grant Bowler did fairly OK in terms of acting, but Irisa/Stephanie Leonidas was great. Julie Benz as the mayor was... Julie Benz. I'm just not a fan of her, something about her just grates me.

End scene gun fight? I understand that the mayor the prostitute/bartender probably don't have military training, but someone should have taken a few minutes out of their day to teach them how to shoot.

CGI? Ships/non-living things look great, animals/aliens not so much. But I think that's unavoidable unless you have a ludicrous budget. In retrospect maybe the Volge army should have been done LotR style; get a few people in makeup/costumes and just duplicate them with a computer. Heck, that might have even ended up cheaper than doing it all on a computer.

Future prospects? There's potential, but I'm not psyched about Irisa's "visions". Sick of fantasy in my sci-fi (looking at you every SyFy channel sci-fi show ever)

From a critical standpoint, I suppose it isn't too great. But I was entertained, and that's all I really care about.

Yes, it's there, and no, you probably haven't completed it all.

I must be the only one not finding this alien race attractive. I'm straight and I'd sooner sleep with Nolan.

    I thought the show ok.

The effects are lacking, compared to a little unknown show called Farscape as well as Alien Nation [I saw Rockne S. O'Bannon is a producer on Defiance, as he was on Farscape and Alien Nation ].

But I can live with so-so effects as long as the story is interesting. The story, was ok/decent. It didn't floor me nor was it anything really new.
But I'll watch it, just to see how it develops.

As far as pilots go, it wasn't half bad. Very, very few series have pilot EPs that could be called spectacular.

Narrative-wise it planted seeds for, by my count, at least half a dozen major arcs to run through the whole season (above and beyond any "episode in a bottle" type scenarios that will inevitably crop up). I'd have liked to see a little more focus, but that just may be my dislike of unnecessarily overlapping stories.

The biggest gripe I have is Syfy's love of virtual sets. At the least make it just a little less obvious when an entire sequence (sans actor) is a pure CG construct.

I liked it for the most part.

Though it did seem they tried to put alot of things together in a very short space of time not sure if it's just me or if anyone felt like they did that to?
