I wouldnt say that there needs to be a naming enforcement, because every game will have their quirky names that mean alterior motives, but those names just wouldnt be elligable for name drops on the show (imo). I would hate to see Defiance take a hit due to using someone's Anime or superhero name and having the author hit them with a copywrite infringement, ya know?

Id actually prefer that to having a character show up on the show called "MonkeyPWN276" or "imakillyou". Copyright infringement or species embarrasment - id pick infringment

Well maybe this will have people come up with thoughtful names. I've always used one that I think is original. But you'll have to wait and meet him later.

I am really interested how the copyright infringement would turn out, it's so hard to prevent as unless I am mistaken it's really hard to check. Majority of players do get their name from something and in a lot of cases it's not as obvious. I'll take myself for example I use names like Kalbuir and Terric both come from the Star Wars universe (books) and I doubt they could make it into the show for that reason.

Well now you won't! You just said its from something else, you should have claimed you made it up and it was just a coincidence.

most of the people at trion and syfy are geeks like the rest of us.so odds are they will know if a player's character name is copyrighted.and i doubt they will use a name that is something stupid like mnkypwner 221.it will probaly be if your name doesnt fit within a set of standards you can't be a part of any contest to have your character appear in show.

Like some other legal obligations related to player behaviour it's a matter of having an official policy and enforcing it.

If a player reports an illegal name, they can investigate and do something about it. They keep a record of those reports and their responses to them. Then if they're ever sued (like NCSoft was by Marvel) they can prove they've done everything reasonable to prevent copyright infringement and generally won't be held responsible for any specific player violations.

I also think it's likely that every MMO has a database table with illegal names and that will include all the more popular violations, which is checked when players create any new character.

My understanding is that copyright law is a bit fuzzy when it comes to stuff like this. Especially with an IP as old and prolific as Star Wars, if they tried to enforce copyright on every character name ever used anywhere in their universe, there'd be few remotely pronouncable names left for any other work of fiction to use. A lot of the names in Star Wars are also derivatives of real-world words from non-English languages so themselves aren't completely original.

I think names outside of the main characters in the six movies would probably be ok.

You'd probably only be in hot water if in addition to using the names you tried to make those characters somehow like the ones from the books. Though if you're really attached to those names I wouldn't go repeating that you've taken them from where you have too often. TRION may decide to err on the side of caution.

they will probably come up with a name (corresponding with the species of course ) and say the gamers name is just a nickname

I dont see problem, they just see what majority of people do from ALL platforms and decisions are based on that, also they can add more content, give quests, more story, after each episode. This should be interesting, lets say theres multi-choice quest, and most people choose to kill someone, and that dude dies in the tv-show.

Players name doesnt mean a thing, actors are the main characters, not us players. If you plan to become famous world wide movie star, dont think its gonna happen.
