I really don't think there's going to be a ton of choice in the game. How could there be when there will be no cross-platform play and multiple servers on each platform? For each individual server could end up being a different story based on the choices of the players there. If they picked one story from a server and not all the others or if they pick the story choices that are most common across the game then the people who didn't go along with those same story choices picked missed out. And that would defeat the purpose of having the game along side the story which is to help make you feel apart of this world. More than likely, any choices we are given will be small and not capable of effecting the show. The parts of the game that will effect the show will be large, scripted events where we may not be making a choice but we're still driving the story by completeing the event. Of course, I could be wrong and I rather hope I am since the alternatives would be much cooler.
If at first you don't succeed use a bigger hammer.

I see a flaw in your logic.

Hypothetically let's say there's some choice players make and they go with the most popular choice across all servers - which would be reasonable.

You claim lack of cross-platform play and multiple servers for each platform is a problem.

You say that people who didn't go along with a particular story choices will feel like they missed out.

But that's always going to be a problem. Even if you put everyone on a single server, not everyone would make the same choice. That's how things work in any social environment where choices are made by a group of people.

So I don't think the platform or server objections are meaningful.

It is possible to implement some kind of scripted story event in a way that updates across servers in (close to) real time and allows players to make a choice.

Say we're faced with an imminent threat and there's a military solution - attack a particular base which has X number of defenders of various types - and a diplomatic / trade solution which requires players to harvest and craft Y number of items.

There could be a moral valence attached to the choice. The developers could make one of those options 'good' and the other 'bad' and each player's personal choice has some effect on their own character.

Since everything boils down to numbers, the game would just need to keep a running tally of X and Y across servers. When the threshold for one is reached, that choice is selected and the story progresses along that path.
