What I'm still confused about is the tereforming. Would I be correct in saying it was unintentional?

Or at least the Votans say it was?

    [edit]

OH! And where did the hellbugs come from? I find it hard to believe they would pack a whole race of hellbugs along with them when fleeing their solar system.
They intended to terraform the planet but when their ships were destroyed, the terraformers were released and started, however it did not go as they planned and created a hybrid world.

The hellbugs were created as a byproduct of the terraforming, apparently they mutated from bacteria.

    Yeah they knew
The original question was about the history (as written and given to us so far) of the Defiance universe.
    Not our interpretations or theories.

And, in my opinion, the only detail actually up for debate thus far is: 'Who caused the something that started the explosions on the arks?'

I'm willing to bet that's a question that will come up in the show, repeatedly, before finally being revealed (and probably not in season 1)
I'm also willing to bet that when we do finally find out who's responsible, they'll be a resident of the town of Defiance. Or, at least, a visitor that just happens to be in town when it's finally revealed

As for my opinion on who it might have been... well...
There's far too little info available for me to make a good guess.
So, I'm just going to point out the two obvious options.

    A) A human, or group of humans, didn't like the possibility of the Votans ever settling on our planet and took it upon themselves to sabotage the Arks.
It's plausible that during the 6 years of negotiations there would be human visitors to the Arks, thus providing the opportunity for sabotage. The '20/20 hindsight' flaw in their plan being that they didn't fully understand Votan tech and realize that the terraforming gear in the debris would begin doing it's job.

    B) A Votan, or group of Votans, became frustrated with 6 years of negotiations gone nowhere and took it upon themselves to force the issue.
They understood their own tech perfectly, so they could inflict 'acceptable losses' upon themselves while making it look like a human attack thus triggering a war. With the added bonus of knowing their terraforming equipment would begin falling to Earth, and start doing it's job, while the war raged.

If they knew and wanted to take it by force why would they leave all their people in stasis instead of preping for war?
