It would not clutter the map because you have to complete the missions in order to unlock the next and will only be able to see one episode mission at a time.
The only counter-argument I've really seen is players wanting this to be exclusive and some kind of reward for being a "true fan" but I really think it'll be very discouraging to come into the game later than others and not understand what's going on in the Episode Missions. There would have to be some degree of a disconnect between the most recent TV Episode and the Episode Mission that is released after it to not be confusing to new-comers. Also, imagine FURTHER down the line? This was a heavily marketed feature, as many have said, so everyone should be able to enjoy it no matter what time you bought the game.
My story: I had not heard of Defiance until a few days after it was released. After reading up on it, I was intrigued but wanted to wait until they ironed out the bugs. Then, I heard the rumor (now confirmed) that the "Episode" missions would only be around for a limited amount of time. That prompted me to buy the game right then and there. I was fortunate enough to find enough time to complete the episode missions, along with 3 of my friends who came in after me.
So there's two sides of the coin to this story. On one side, by making the Episode missions a limited time availability, that prompted me to buy the game far ahead of schedule. Would have I bought the game eventually? Probably, but you never know.
Side two though, is that I highly agree that there is no reason to take the content out of the game. The argument of "cluttering" up the map is ridiculous. Obviously once you complete the mission, its over and you no longer see it. But additionally, where Nolan and Irissa (spelling?) were first standing with their roller, you see them yes. People who had already completed that quest, DO NOT see them standing there. Once you had completed the side quest, you no longer viewed them in that area. Just like what's her face (can't think of her name, very first NPC you run into in the Tutorial) isn't standing at the Earth camp the entire game...
I also agree that the Season Pass (that I purchased) has the (almost promised) rumor of a new playable race. Will I want to start over a new character after all of that hard work? Who knows maybe, just for the fun of it. Will I without the Episode Missions? No, I won't even consider it.
I have a feeling they will add the missions back in for a limited time at some point, likely after the season finale and re-runs have started. Maybe they see that as a marketing opportunity itself. Re-runs start prior to season 2 of the show, they advertise that the Episode missions are up and you can play along while watching the show (again) with some special sale on the game/and or DVD set of the show becomes available. I don't know, just brain storming trying to find logic in their decision.
In summary, I support this thread and wish they would make the episode missions available as a permanent feature. Players who have completed them will not be impacted what so ever. The "true fan" or "elitist" (or self absorbed person whatever you want to call them) who would be upset of this change probably make up less then 10% of the entire community. Of course that percentage I just grabbed out of thin air and I reserve the right to be wrong entirely, but it's just based on my observation of forum posts regarding this particular topic.
From reading their responses in the Q&A going on today I get the impression that they had NO IDEA that anyone would ever have a problem with disappearing content and that they are now scrambling to put it back in. Possibly even permanently. I'm going to C&P some direct responses here:
"Some of the crossover content is planned to be removed, some isn't. However, it certainly feels like people want this to stay active so I think we might just do that."
"Some of it yes but as there have been so many requests to not disable the content, we might simply leave it in. In many cases, it isn't disruptive to leave it in so we might do that."
So I would guess that it's most likely coming back, and for good.
If I'd have known about this weekly removal of content in advance, I would not have bought the game, and I would not have bought the DLC Season Pass. I don't have as much free time as I'd like, and this game, with its subscription-free model, appealed to me as something I could put down for a couple of weeks at time and come back to when I had a free weekend.
Likewise, several of my friends who had been showing interest in the game have now decided not to bother at all after I mentioned how the tie-in content works, and how the missions with the TV show's main characters had been removed. (Despite being phased anyway, and invisible to people who'd already done the missions.)
As a 15-year MMO veteran, I do understand that there are always a vocal minority of MMO players who will fight tooth-and-nail to try and exclude as many other players from content as possible, so that they may better feel like a beautiful and unique snowflake, but I'm pretty certain that pandering to these people is going to be bad for your bottom-line, Trion.
Oh, they knew alright. Trion received legendary amounts of flak on their forums when they ran their first big one-off Rift event. I'm just surprised they didn't learn their lesson after that. At least these are running for a week, I suppose, rather than just once.
Yes, once you complete the mission it's no longer available to you. Why would you complain about what sorts of missions other players still have access to?
Look, when you finish the main storyline, other players are still playing it. You killed the robot guarding the Golden Gate bridge, yet for other people it remains intact. It will be killed a million times without your knowledge.
So.. why do you care if someone can still participate in (example) the initial Nolan and Irisa adventures we had at launch? Because of the way phasing works, you can't see those NPCs anymore once you complete the mission. Why care if others still can, and can still do the missions long after you've completed them? How is that unlike any other content in the game?
I swear, some of you are coming across as control freaks. You insist people play the game the way you want to play it, at the pace you want to set.. this is not YOUR single-player game. You're in an MMO and playing with hundreds of thousands of other players, and every one of them has the same expectations of having fun as you do. Focus on your own gameplay experience, which is in no way impacted when someone else is playing through episode content you've already completed, and stop sticking your noses where it doesn't belong.
If you want to finish the episodic content between weekly episodes, then do it! Nobody is stopping you from rushing through everything. Just stop trying to dictate the pace for everyone else.
I agree, I missed these episodes due to just getting the game and if they were in I could watch the show alongside them. I will probably miss the next few episodes too until I get further in the gameSo I would like the option as playing them. After season 1 has finished they could have them as season 1 missions for people to play if they wish. Also without them I am missing lore of the game.
