Gained about ~50 ego but received no ego points

went from like 470 to 526 and received the extra inventory space, extra spot to equip a perk, but i didn't receive any extra ego points

I wouldn't say its unnecessary, its a weird premise in the game so I can get why there is confusion. Also the terminology is common enough that finding the answer would be difficult.

But yes, the game is working as intended. EGO score does not result in EGO upgrades.

EGO upgrades boost EGO score. (Every upgrade earned is like +10) Upgrades are earned purely by XP and thats the orange bar at the bottom.
