... the small battle with the Volge will bleed over to the game, the town of Defiance could not be their only interest? All the players alerted for the weekend battle!
The pilot episode seemed a bit rough around the edges, to me. However, I think this is the norm. Back in the day, I tuned into the first few episodes of Babylon 5 and thought it had the worst acting and characters ever. Obviously, though, it got better because I think most of us would agree that B5 is one of the most amazing Sci-Fi shows to ever run. I think B5's (and most every other new show's) problem is that the characters are new and the actors are still getting used to working with each other, so their chemistry and character dynamics haven't matured. (The most notable exception to his trend, to me, was Firefly, where it seemed everyone had been working together for quite some time... even in the pilot. I really miss Firefly.)
The other trouble the Defiance pilot had was that it needed to introduce us to all the characters, and there may have been just one or two too many. Maybe if Joss Whedon was writing this show, it could've been done more aptly and efficiently (but then you also run the risk of having one or two of the major characters you just introduced being dead by the end of the episode...) I think that Nolan and Irissa were introduced pretty well, but the rest seemed rushed and more caricature than character. Hopefully, that will all smooth out over the rest of the season when they can focus on smaller groups of the cast.
The rest of the show was just OK - entertaining to watch, but not amazing. I was a little disappointed to see the whole "I need more time" cliche in the big action sequence, especially since it was so poorly executed, and it felt like the whole battle was just a shiny object dangled in front of us to keep our attention.
That said, I think the show has a lot of potential if, in later episodes, the writers can show a little more finesse.

The game is pretty fun, if not slightly affected by the opposite problem: having a strong start, but losing a lot of a steam early on. Also, I kind of don't like how the main characters in the game seem to have almost the exact same stories as the main characters in the show (e.g. Cooper as reluctant law man, and the matronly governess who is struggling to civilize the wild...)
Still, the game is pretty fun, just needs to be fleshed out a little more.
I think the stories are intended to be somewhat different. In game story we deal with with the dark matter threat / raiders / 99ersand the tv show is more about the Adventures of Nolan and his Votan girl.
I do wish Varus was in the TV show tho; I hope he makes an appearance. . . Dr Von Bach too. . . and some raiders. . . I like raiders. . .
I think the pilot did what a pilot is suppose to do: introduce all the characters and set up the story. It did seem all over the place but I think they were trying to let people know that they've got action, adventure, love, hate, sex and violence all packed into one show. I give it 3 thumbs up.
I agree she definitely was terrible and definitely didn't sound like i had expected from the typical indogene after having played the game. i was expecting the emotionally detached barely distracted by the lower life forms chatter interrupting their important research type not the snarky country doctor type i was annoyed by the mayors assistants behavior as well just didnt seem to fit the indogene profile either
I thought the show was great. It had high and low points, but overall I really enjoyed it and I think it'll take off as time goes on. The special effects aren't incredible, but I'm not sure what people expect; the reason there's no sci-fi shows on TV is because they're expensive to produce to the point where it kills them before they really get going. I'll take good enough over great in that respect if it means the show lives long enough to become invested in it.
I do have to agree with people who didn't like the doctor, though. She's grating, and instead of seeming smart and superior she just comes off as a hyper-b...each. She was really the only character I just plain didn't like.
Nolan and Irisa are great, though, and I liked every part they were in.
I like them both. But my desire for playing the game is starting to drip away.
I think I will watch all episodes of TV series as I am a sci-fi fan. Would like to see them invest more in realism, though. Those beasts that Nolan and Irisa met in the woods were walking on pointy legs on a soft ground?!
One of the reasons Star trek was so successful was their team of developers which job was to come up with plausible technologies and it worked. Many of them were over the top, but were still fun to watch and to some extent believable.
Defiance the series need to do the same. Yes, earth is terraformed and there are all kinds of new and strange creatures, but laws of physics are not changed. And many other things are also the same. The series should not turn into cartoonish plethora of weird and alien.
