As the title says is there some way to get rid of the weapons/shield we start with, salvage matrix says no options available so cannot be salvaged and they are not salable so how do I free up the inventory slots these no longer useful items are wasting?

I managed to sell the shield but my starter LMG is still the best LMG in game for pure raw critical damage.
I don't think the starter can be sold. The shield certainly can, unless it was a glitch that let me sell it =P
Unequip them from your loadouts "L" key and delete them from inventory.
Completely unequip it from all loadouts and try again.

The delete key is normally only hidden for things that are in your loadouts (any loadout, not just your current one)

It should just say, "Are you sure? This is currently equipped on loadout #N"
It's right up there with "how the heck do I quit?!?!@?!"
Theres a quit option? :/ I've been playing since beta and I've just been alt f4ing....
Under Options, the Account section. Actually, there may even be an Exit Game button in the upper right when you bring up one of the sections of the Ego circle too.
I've gotten used to just using the /logout command. One of the many useful game commands you'll find listed by typing /help in the (expanded) chat window. Amazing how many people don't know about /logout, /inspect, etc.
