Well, Diablo 3 isn't an MMO, but point taken enough.

I still think it's a silly idea, but then again here I am with a giant tabletop filled with comics I'll never read again and "collectable" lego minifigures in funny poses. I'm not really one to talk on what people spend their money on.

Background lore, true enough, but things like maps and perk lists absolutely can and will go out of date. The devs have already said the map will be being effected by show/game tie-in events, and of course there will be new areas added with DLC that a guide would be unable to cover. The EGO grid has already been modified from release, and probably will continue to be, and even little changes like something going from 2% to 3% can make enough of a difference to make a guide useless. If there's misinformation in there, why bother reading it at all? That's why, for a game like this, a digital guide makes more sense. The publishers can continuously update them (though, to be fair, they usually just don't).
Prima makes a physical guide for SWTOR, BradyGames makes a bunch for WoW, and most other MMOs have accompanying guides. They're actually very useful for figuring out individual quest/missions and how to beat tougher bosses because these are things that normally are not changed in updates. When DLC comes out, they simply release another guide for the DLC. Once major patching ends, the developers usually license someone to make a guide.
